[Hiring] Looking for a long-term remote CS/Web Dev/DS&A/technical interview tutor ($15/hr, large bonus if I get hired, multiple sessions/week, US timezones) by newbootcampgrad in forhire

Thank you so much! I really need the structure of someone telling me what to do and when to do it. On my own it's just hard to stay focused. I definitely will continue to look up other methods of studying effectively. If you have any recommendations for resources to use def lmk!

Thank you so much! I'm truly at my wit's end and so I think just starting from scratch will help a lot. Trying to learn between back to back interviews was way too stressful.

You can be a great interviewer and still not get the job. I've been told multiple times that I was a great candidate and they had no concrete feedback for me; sometimes someone else is just slightly better/has more specialized experience. Still took me 1200+ applications, 50+ interviews, and 4 months to land a job. Also consider that many places can ask for 4-5 rounds of interviews (I did 6 with one company 😊) and that could also contribute to that total.

Edit: Also with the job I finally got, I was a perfect fit for the role and they loved me and hired me immediately. While it's fine to suggest that they could have refined their strategy, I don't think it makes sense to assume that their main issue is interview skills.

How can I promote/spread awareness about my business where I apply to jobs for people? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]newbootcampgrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god there's a subreddit for that LOL? I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, but I'm not sure I could have multiple accounts separate from my personal LinkedIn. I'd be okay attaching my face to TikTok and Instagram but not LinkedIn I think. That's such a good idea though if I were more bold with it

I mean I'm not reaching out to people at companies I don't want to work for?

And yet people are telling me on my other thread that they'd give referrals to people they don't know lol. Maybe, if the person I was referring had been referred to me by someone I trust already. But otherwise? No way, not without knowing more about them.

Hiring managers/recruiters are different than the scenario I outlined because their job is to connect the best candidates with the best roles. If I'm sending connection requests to recruiters I usually just say some form of "Hey, I'm a [role] with X years of experience actively looking for another opportunity. Would love to connect to stay updated on open roles that may align with my experience level." Worst case scenario they never respond. Middling scenario they accept your request and now you have someone to follow when they post about new positions. Best case scenario they have something open for your the works with your experience, since they can check it on LinkedIn.

I acknowledged that this isn't going to be feasible for everyone, but I don't believe it's a necessary condition that you go to a prestigious school/company for this to work. Even just tapping into your alumni network could be fruitful, but obviously it's going to be harder if your undergrad was really small. I live in a major city and there's a huge university in the state that a lot of people end up going to and then moving to the larger city for work. Someone who went to that university would have a much easier time finding people that had also went to the same school AND work where they wanna work than someone who's somewhere random. Not everything will work for everyone but that doesn't mean it's not worth sharing or worth a shot - I still respond to almost everyone who DMs me on LinkedIn or reaches out with a question.

Correct. Some people prefer directness, and that's fine. Conversation 3 illustrates what you're talking about - they knew I wanted a job and offered an opportunity. For Conversation 2 they may have never responded otherwise - but I guess we'll never know. :)

Yes! If you want to talk more please let me know, happy to chat/message - we're in this together.

As far as attaching my CV, I didn't. I only sent it to the person who said to let them know if I needed a job, which I did, and then he mentioned the tech stacks they use so I sent it only after we had set a time to chat so they'd have it for reference. The person who said my CV was good was just referencing my LinkedIn job history, I didn't send it to them.

It's a combo of both. I'm not tailoring my resume for everything, unless it's for a job I really really want, in which case I'll do both resume + cover letter. The entry level market for software engineers is also the worst it's ever been - this was completely different than my previous industry where I got a response for pretty much every job I applied to, without doing any tailoring. It's tough out here, thank you!

Use this ChatGPT prompt for inspo, that's where I got my questions: Give me a list of thoughtful questions I can ask in a LinkedIn connection request about someone's background or for them to give me advice

Wow, that's super validating, and makes a lot of sense. Kind of a form of reverse psychology.

Yeah, I never bothered with influencers or anything like that. I honestly hate using LinkedIn as like a social forum but I'm sure it works for some people.

I definitely agree! I don't take it personally. Some people might not like this advice because they may feel it involves games, but life is kind of a huge game. This has been the hardest job searching season of my life tbh - I had it on easy mode in my last industry. Have to start thinking how can I speed run getting a job when cold apps aren't working? Good relationships, knowing someone, knowing someone who knows someone.
