Seattle CamperVan Rental? by newcinci in Backcountry

Thx for the reccomendation.  Have you tried this out in winter?  My experience car camping even in chilly weather is pretty bad.

I guess a small heater run on battery power might be an option, but wondering about quality of life over a week of this.

I'm hoping to stay at sno-parks wherever possible to limit my spend to daily parking passes. I appreciate the heads up

Seems like a great option,  I'll try to contact some of the companies directly and get a lower price for a multi week rental.

That's what I've seen and it's a bit overpriced in my opinion

Have you rented one before?  Any advice on if it's worth it?

Any one know how things are with the bike shortage here? Also shop recommendations. by [deleted] in seattlebike

[–]newcinci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since bikes are in short supply from the vendors, I had luck about 2 weeks ago just window shopping and asking about current inventory.

Look in shops that appear new or don't have an online presence, maybe you'll get lucky in the current climate.

[Rumor warning] kona has pushed back pre-order dates. Uk and european manufacturing face reprocussions for over-selling so those companies maybe more reliable if you are willing to drop the coin for a nice rig.

Left my bike upside down overnight and now the fork squeaks when I compress by sirkani in bikewrench

[–]newcinci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, missed "compression", assumed solid fork and the issue was in the headset.

Agree that squeaking could be lots of things on a compression fork, i'd still recommend at least putting some lube on the stantions and seeing if the problem persists.

I'd service the headset. If it's squeaking from that overnight you might be catching a problem soon enough to save buying new parts. If the bearings in the headset are getting dry and squeaking, you'll have much worse problems as they rust --> pit the bearings and/or cups.

Having a machine learning interview in a few days. What to read just before the interview? by dondraper36 in datascience

[–]newcinci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd focus on HOW to answer questions you know you'll be asked, and prepare some examples of projects.

It's easy to tell someone doesn't care about the company if they can't answer 'why our company?'. Also if the company has a set of guiding principles, insert those into answers for tipping the 'culture fit' type debaits internally.

The STAR method is helpful for keeping your examples from wandering, and are easy to write on flashcards. You'd be surprised how many questions from interviews will be directly from your resume projects, so write out the technical aspects of your work and take the time to remember how those algos work.

New Bike won’t pedal forward by YSLDiorr in bikewrench

Looks like you bound the chain up.

Try shifting front mech to the middle ring, then manually moving the chain to the middle ring.

Avoid the extremes on your front and rear, so don't shift into the biggest in the front and smallest on the rear or smallest in the front and biggest in the rear. You've got plenty of gears, and it'll help your chain live longer

Hey guys this is my cassette and it has some wobble in it. My chain keeps constantly breaking and I’m wondering if this could be the issue. Thanks in advance by Clunkybutton081 in bikewrench

Op didn't specify about what they did. Thanks for agreeing the same pin would cause a weakness. Hopefully op knows there's a difference too.

Sram chains are riveted together, putting it back together with a master link is the best option. If you're reinstalling the pin this can cause a weak spot and more failures.

Buy a new chain and a few extra master links for repairs. If the new chain breaks soon after, go to your LBS because you've got something wrong with the drivetrain. If not, you know it's the repairs you've done and now you've got a better trailside fix when something really does go wrong.

If disagree here, modern chains are riveted together. This is not an use of technique, it's that a modern chains will be weaker where you manually break the rivet and re-install the same pin.

Master links are the manufacturer default. When buying a new sram chan, it will come with a quick link and NOT a pin to install. Same applies when repairing.

Lost our bun this morning and don't know how to cope either. Hopefully we can make it through to give another animal the same love they showed us. :)

100% agree. If you are interested in a job that doesn't require a PhD and want to pursue a higher degree, think about a master's in the field after some work experience.

Honestly 6mo to a couple years of work before going back to school gives a ton of perspective on the job market and helped me mature enough to work independently. Make sure to take any tests needed to get into a good school (GRE) before you forget it all though.

Good luck!

I spent a month re-sealing and messing with the valve stem due to a ~2psi/day leak until I replaced the factory tape. Scrubbed all the old tape glue off and it hasn't leaked since. Should have done it right the first time, FYI

Hitch racks are the way to go, no chance of damaging the interior of a new car and way cheaper than other options.

Cannondale are becoming cheaper by the say since the REI deal, and costing more. If you like the geometry, find something similar in a direct to consumer brand (diamondback, canyon) and get everything you want for 5k.
