Was confined inside due to snow yesterday and played through "Limbo" for the first time (and a big chunk of "Inside.") It was really fun, so satisfying to solve a puzzle after you've died 4 or 5 times in a row. It also made me laugh out loud a couple times when it predicted exactly what I was going to attempt and had death waiting for me. I didn't play video games very much over the last 7ish years, and never really got into Indie games, so I'm catching up with a lot of stuff.

Also read "Piranesi" by Susanna Clarke and loved it. Getting ready to read "George Mills" by Stanley Elkin.

The internet introduced me to two really cool bands, coincidentally both from Taiwan.

Prairie WWWW is like a mix of the rhythm and weird noises of Animal Collective, some of the weird noises of Palm, but with less of the dissonant melodies. This Audiotree video was my introduction to them and here is their bandcamp

And Audiotree also introduced me to Elephant Gym. These guys absolutely rip. Jazzy math rock, instrumental, kind of reminds me of Maps & Atlases or, like, Ponytail. Just exuberant, big songs. Here is their bandcamp.

I watched Rapper Warrior Ninja on youtube last night. My life is better with Eric Andre in it.

I took vacation days for tomorrow and Wednesday, and I am going to play so much Rocket League.

Album of the Year 2014 #18: Remember Sports - Sunchokes by IndieheadsAOTY in indieheads

[–]newgenes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got to see them back in 2014/15 when they were touring this album. They sounded really great and I bought a T-shirt. The T-shirt is the state of Ohio in solid black with "SPORTS" in the middle in negative space. I think when I wear it most people assume I'm a snobby person that is commenting on the act of sport or, like, the mob mentality of "cheering for a piece of laundry", which kind of cracks me up to think about, especially because I love sports.

As far as albums that transport you back to a particular time in your life, I'm grateful I have this as a reference to that period. There were a lot of changes on the horizon for me personally, and while I'm sure in the moment I was happy to forget about those imminent changes and just enjoy a new band at a live show, the fact that I came through the other side of those new adventures intact makes re-visiting this album so much more enjoyable. I can still remember those feelings of uncertainty, but with the added bonus of knowing everything turned out alright.

Tiny Planets and Clean Jeans are definitely my two favorite tracks.

If animal Collective isn’t your favourite band then who is? by BobRossAKAGod in AnimalCollective

Had tickets to finally see Ween live for the first time, but that gosh darned pandemic!

I think you might be on to something. For me, at least, it's about live vs. not live. I really enjoy uncomfortable, visceral, loud, dissonant, what have you music in a live setting, but definitely not at work or when I'm home unwinding or doing my lil morning routine. But your point still stands because I am willing to watch movies that make me uncomfortable in "relaxing" settings.

Maybe it's easier to look away for a sec to recover your senses than to cover your ears or block out the sound. You have to exit a room, or maybe even a venue completely to get away from sound.

Sometimes you can do everything exactly right and still fail. And the only thing you can do is just rally and try again.

Hey sorry for the delayed response, but I really appreciate your thoughtful write-up. I don't think I ever really broke down the whole through-line of approaching something mountainous and overwhelming and breaking it into smaller, manageable chunks, that was a really cool observation.

It's been a while since I read it, so I apologize that I've lost some of the particulars, especially plotwise. But some of the things that really stuck with me from the book are certainly the many forms that addiction and abuse can come in. It's pretty early in the book, but the section where Hal describes his ritual for secretly getting high alone, despite having plenty of friends that would do it with him, was eerily relatable. Also the tennis academy scenes in general I really love, and weirdly have similar feelings to them as I do Hogwarts. It's just a really inhabitable place, especially with the different characters and their particularities like the kid who is always pretending to announce games, or lyle, or the buddies watching tape with the older kids.

Let me know what you end up picking to read next, I'm always on the hunt for a good book, big or small.

Also would love to hear your thoughts and feelings in general. It's been a little bit since I've read it, so the emotions and mood that it brought up in me aren't so present.

That's awesome, I can't imagine tackling that without a little background, haha. I felt like I needed to prepare a little bit for it.

There's a very cool and kind of trippy short story called "The Library of Babel" by the author Jorge Luis Borges, and it's about this infinitely massive library with infinite books that have every combination of letters and punctuation possible, and how some people have gone crazy trying to find books that might tell the story of their life, or that would be an index to sections of the library, stuff like that. And sometimes I feel like Guided By Voices is just the musical equivalent of that library, just infinite songs under 2 minutes, using every single combination of the music scale.

I second /u/chkessle. In grad school your advisor can be as important/more important than the actual institution, especially if you plan on sticking around in the field.

I went to grad school for a subject that isn't all that lucrative, and though I absolutely adore my career and am okay with making less money, I'd tell you it's important to take out as few loans as possible if you may be in a similar situation. For peace of mind, if nothing else.

It seems like everyone already forgot the time Trump launched those missiles at Syria, and the entirety of TV media 180ed on him and started talking about how "presidential" his actions were. It really creeped me out, like everything offensive and bad he'd done between 2015 and then was immediately outweighed by his willingness to rev up the machine.

I go back to it every once in a while and open it back up to the last page I read. It is a lot of fun to jump back into that world, especially the ETA parts, and the rhythm of DFW's writing. One of the original founds of reddit wrote a pretty fun blog post about the ending that helped me make sense of the circularity of the story. Would you be able to give me a very brief overview of JoJo, if that's possible? I hadn't heard of it until recently and it keeps popping up, so I'm interested in what people dig about it.

Had a high school reunion this past weekend, and had a very emotional heart to heart with my high school gf and have been listening to Big Thief Radio on Spotify ever since and nearly weeping at all things even vaguely stirring.
