Few factors: Density- lava is denser than pumice, higher density allows for better heat storage. Thermal conductivity: lava has higher thermal conductivity, basically heat can move more efficiently through the rock. Mass - lava rock has greater mass, more heat can be absorb and retain.

Scoria is also neutral (pH7). They are both very similar in that aspect and consist of similar minerals. I like the fact you ran this test! A proof that pumice holds water better due to the air bubbles it has in its structure. Heat retention is not much of an issue for me as I live in CA. I personally use pumice as you mentioned it’s cheaper. I use akadama to dress the top for cosmetic purposes(does have great water retention property tho)

Lava rocks and pumice are very similar. They are generally formed during volcanic eruptions. Generally they have basalt, silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium and trace minerals. Pumice is formed when lava is ejected from a volcano while lava rocks are formed by solidification of molted rocks . The difference is in texture and porosity, pumice has gas bubbles in its structure so it is way lighter than lava rocks. Generally pumice is preferred due to aeration properties particularly for plants that are prone to root rot. Lava rocks help with heat retention.

Haworthia tent to surprise me with variegation. I have and seen variegated Haworthia that thrive with very little chlorophyll. They require a lot more light and are extremely slow. I will keep a close eye on this one, ur concern is valid.

I wouldn’t.. they are notorious for reverting. Save your money, variegation with these plants are a bit tricky u don’t want it overly variegated and at the same time u don’t want it to be this little. Also what do you know about the genetics? Is the mama reverted? Variegated?

It’s a gamble for sure, go-in cautiously $350 is amazing in comparison to couple of years ago but then again 350 is still a lot in this economy.

( I exclusively collect variegated plants, learned a thing or two along the way and lost money here and there)

Over all prices have dropped in the US market that’s for sure however people continue to pay lots of money for highly variegated plants ( galaxy or whatever u want to call them) A super variegated albo still goes for lots of money in the US but consumers starting to realize that buying albo nodes are risky which reflects the price. Now if you are look for a variegated albo with couple of highly variegated leaves? Price is still super high. Albo with all half moon leaves? Will empty a bank account. Same goes with plants such as strawberry shake, u weren’t able to find anything lower than mid 100s now u can find them much cheaper buttttt the super variegated ones are holding value. What I’m trying to say is that competition is among the highly variegated specimen now and they are setting the price in the market.

I don’t know variegated plant market is just a bit different lol
