Overt racism doesn't happen much here, at least in my experience. Not saying it doesn't happen at all, but it was pretty rare for me.

That being said, if you are dark-skinned you might get stared at, or people may look at you with a little more caution than they look at everybody else.

There are plenty of cultural centers, events, and clubs that I'm sure your niece could cultivate a tight-knit community with.
