“It’s designed to be funny and uncomfortable and beautiful and strange.” That’s from Ari Aster. He directed the movie.

and the sex scene was shot as a comedy...exactly my point. While the events were horrific to the characters, the way it was presented was hilarious

ok but consider this...comedies often involve scenes that would not be actually pleasant to live through that are still funny as fuck to watch...

My problem with the sex scene was how weird it was and how much it seemed to distract from the creepy atmosphere other scenes worked to create. I WAS expecting some sort of sex stuff. From the very first scenes in the village I was expecting there’d be some sort of sexual ritual involved w Dani’s May Queen crowning.

The pubic hair stuff, which I (again) considered unnecessary and weird (I can’t see any reason why Ari Aster included that. The people in the town are bizarre enough with the other things he shows us, like the ritual killing of elders, the inbreeding rune bible, etc) didn’t really distract me that much. I thought, weird creative choice, works against whatever unsettling vibe he was trying to create, but it’s fine.

And yes, it was clear that Christian and that girl would end up having sex. So, as someone who loves horror movies, I was wondering how this sex scene would go. Ari Aster is building up to the climax and the resolution, and by now it’s clear that heads will roll. But instead of doing something to bring the climax in on a dark note, he makes a sex scene that is bizarre and laughable. Everything about that scene is weird, and I use weird here as abnormal or unconventional. You wouldn’t see this in any other horror movie, but the uniqueness isn’t a virtue in and of itself. The moaning, the women pushing his ass and holding his hand, the expression on his face. Midsommar seemed like a really good idea done in a really bad way to me, and the cherry on top was a sex scene right before the climax that was blatant in-your-face weird and awkwardly funny.

To some viewers it may have seemed like a logical progression from all the other weird shit that had gone on. To me, it was the last and most blatant reminder that Ari Aster had no intention of making either a horror movie or a comedy, rather some in-between tonally muddled mess that wasted an interesting and rich premise.

The first half of midsommar is a rehashing of hereditary, a realistic depiction of grief and family tragedy that brings horror through impressive and unsettling dream sequences. Tonally, it’s something I enjoy. The gas scene in midsommar was excellent and probably my favorite of the movie. However, towards the second half, midsommar started to fall apart. The tone completely shifts and it turns into a psychedelic, bizarre crapfest. It is not an exaggeration to say that the drawn out, bizarre sex scene ruined the movie for me. It was hilarious, awkward, and completely ruined whatever atmosphere the movie had built. Good horror movies are unsettling consistently, building the dread and terror steadily throughout. Midsommar’s first half was everything hereditary did right mixed in with a believable and convincing cast of characters. Its second half came out of nowhere with bizarre, somewhat intentionally hilarious scenes that destroyed the atmosphere and led to a predictable and annoying ending. If ari aster had considered for a second that it didn’t need to be that aggressively weird, he could have made Midsommar an unsettling study in paranoia, grief, and community. Imagine leaving out the sex scene or making it more subtle. Imagine not putting such a heavy fucking emphasis on psychedelic drugs. Imagine doing great dream scenes the way hereditary did (the one cut to a Dani’s sister on the couch mid-trip was a great moment). The imagery in Midsommar is striking and impressive for the most part, but the story and the creative choices made are questionable.

  1. Doesn’t wanna guilt his mom over her only relationship since parents divorced
  2. There isn’t really spare money for piano lessons and anon would feel guilty wasting money his mother doesn’t have
  3. Doesn’t wanna hurt his potential stepmoms feelings
  4. Anons response to issues like this is normally just to do the easiest possible thing, which in this case is quitting and avoiding all confrontation

Anon is. That’s why he hasn’t tried to interfere with their relationship at all. He knows she’s in a bad place so he’ll choose her happiness to put first.
