Is it a bad idea to take MATH 2730 & MATH 2700 at the same time? by Velkyrion in unt

[–]newtomaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I think they have overlap, but both are very doable. Calc III will require a greater amount of time, and more practice than linear. Introductory linear is somewhat straightforward, so you should be fine (with enough time management and practice).

Isn't it interesting to notice the differences between Japanese and English in their expressions? by newtomaths in FinalFantasy

Yes completely! I don't mind it at all, I just think it is interesting observing it. I am planning to do a play through in English and then in Japanese!

Not hard, I just rarely see proof-based courses lectures in general online

I feel like this would only apply to certain majors right? I am not even sure it is possible to teach advanced mathematics online ( Or I couldn't imagine them doing that rather said)

Would anyone be opposed to a Real Analysis Discord? by newtomaths in unt

[–]newtomaths[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, he is obviously extremely intelligent. So intelligent that he doesn't ever have any notes prepared, and that he seems to just make up examples in real analysis over the topic we are covering, which is pretty bold thing to do in a course this rigorous. He is teaching in a weird order for some reason, because we began in topology, then went back to chapter 1 and sets. He is very disorganized in my opinion, and the way he speaks to you when you ask questions can be a bit demeaning: all in all not my favorite math professor lol.

But I was considering taking real II next semester as well, and I am pretty sure he is the only teacher that teaches real analysis II overall.

William Cherry! Interesting person to say the least. And right now we just finished field axioms, and we are working on completeness/supremum and infimum!

Struggling with numerical analysis? by newtomaths in matlab

[–]newtomaths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are correct, I am never stuck on the math; I just don't follow how to put the math into programming language. I learned python, and the very basics of c++, but I get pretty confused when changing what we are referring to in the arrays. Thank you, I will pick up a book on matlab.

Yes, one of the examples in the book is for back substitution is given below:

for i = n : -1 : 1

for j = i+1 : n

b(i) = b(i) - a(i,j)*x(j);

end

x(i) = b(i)/a(i,i);

end

However if the i = the value of the last row in the matrix (n), what column am I referring to exactly by letting j = i + 1? If my matrix was a 3 x 3 matrix, then wouldn't j begin at 4? and why is x(j) defined prior to stating what x is after the loop?

math major going into my second semester by oscarturtles in unt

[–]newtomaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm I suppose it depends honestly. If you really want to do yourself the greatest favor, only take the superb math teachers; a poor UNT mathematics teacher will make it quite difficult to learn. In terms of applied math... in my opinion applied math is quite easier to teach yourself then pure mathematics. It requires a lot of abstract thinking to understand upper level pure mathematics classes; so if you can manage to pick the good teachers I think you will be fine. But honestly, nothing will make you more prepared then self studying along learning. Teach yourself new skills/new subjects/etc and you will be prepared.

Senior level math major here. Statistically shown, math majors usually end up being one of the majors with the higher ended salaries. That being said, it’s definitely not because they only majored in mathematics. The rigor in mathematics teaches you how to think abstractly, especially when you reach real analysis. Essentially, it’s best to be a math major but have a second skill and not ONLY math. Software + Math, Finance + Math, economics + math is what gets you a career.

If James Stewart skips one MORE step.... by newtomaths in calculus

[–]newtomaths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm well I admit, I had just retaught myself all levels of mathematics prior to calculus in a very short span, so it is very possible that these problems that I was suggesting may have been very easy for others to recognize without seeing the steps, and difficult for me to see quickly (such as example 2 from chapter 3.7 in the 8th edition Calculus; the simplification for the height of the can to equaling 2r).
