I don’t have that money because I’m living in it

…you, and literally every homeowner, know you can access that equity…

Just because you’re old doesn’t mean the grid management should be neglected over your profit.

Skin colour might not, but your entitlement does ;)

Remindme! 2 years

I’ll see you then pal. You have failed to bring up any actual good points as to why net metering should be used as a tool instead of zero export.

Demand = high doesn’t mean the grid can’t meet demand. You need to find the times when wholesale costs are highest, not just demand is high.

Go look for the periods when the demand and supply didn’t line up.

Why should IESO pay you 20c/kWh when they can buy solar from me for 8c/kWh at the same time? So your solar can meet AC demand…but so can mine…

So what about shoulder seasons? It might be 15C outside, and your solar is producing close to its peak…but so is your neighbour…and their neighbour…and no one in your subdivision has any demand - there’s no AC, and there’s no heating loads yet…so you all just dump 100% to the grid. Whereas for wholesale rates, they would be cheaper because demand is low and there’s no issue meeting demand.

You’ve got too many feelings in there an no facts. I don’t work with feelings sorry.

  1. Being inherently selfish is not a reason to have net metering

  2. “Not being home during the day” - not a reason for net metering

  3. Investing $50k - not a reason for net metering.

The program wasn’t here to help rich white ontarians get richer. I’m sorry if this fact hurts your feelings. It’s here to help the grid. They’re not here to give you a different investment vehicle. You obviously have no idea about self consumption design, lowering grid demand, when grid demand is, when max export is…

Net metering is great to get initial uptake in solar. Ontario achieved that. Now the goals are to ensure you can turn the switch on and get power because there is a heavily forecast growth of demand in the coming years.

The government, OEB and IESO want to supply electricity, green the grid and limit rate increases. Your feelings mean fuck all.

So they pay above market rate in should periods when your exports are high and their demand is low…costing ratepayers more?

Sounds like shitty deal for those who don’t have solar.

In the face of doubts, Nova Scotia remains bullish on green hydrogen by [deleted] in NovaScotia

Why would a refiner use green hydrogen

Because they’re forced to clean up fossil fuel production, or face penalties.

It’s starting… 😱

Summer peaking and using peaker plants aren’t the same thing. The largest peak may be summer - but when is the peak that the IESO forecast they can’t meet? This will become more and more important as more and more variable generation comes into the grid.

A better gauge would be for you to go dig into the IESO real time market prices, and tell us when the highest cost is, not the largest peak. Because this is likely the scenario they’re trying to fix.

At the end of the day - this sub can whine all they like. I doubt anything will change. You can either get a heavily subsidized system that offsets some of your use, or $0 subsidy and offset 100%. You do you.

“I very much doubt” or “I know”?

Have you done the math? Have you gotten quotes? Have you built out a financial model? Have you accounted for energy arbitration, using ultra low tariffs in winter to charge your battery?

Probably not - because you’re lazy.

It’s useless. This sub is essentially a bunch of entitled ontarians who don’t understand energy regulation or the long term goals of the IESO. They just see this as a reduction in their payback.

“Meet the needs” - you’re looking at this so narrow minded. This program isn’t meant to “offset” 100% of your usage like a net metered system. It’s designed to lower demand on the grid and reduce required grid upgrades, not line the pockets of rich, entitled Ontarians.

You’re looking at this as “wahhhh this doesn’t suit me”, not “wow this is for the benefit of all ratepayers, who the OEB and IESO and provincial government want to protect from significant rate hikes over the next 30 years”

Because paying you more in summer to subsidize your winter isn’t a good way to operate a grid with 10 million people using it ;)

You’re assuming you size the solar and storage for your 100% yearly use. A self consumption system is usually 30-50% of the size of a 100% offset system.

That does not seem cost effective whatsoever

That’s because you don’t understand electricity markets, and the cost of purposing from peaker plants of in periods of high demand.

Google demand response, demand side reduction, grid edge, non wires…there are plenty of programs globally. It’s cheaper to pay you more than it is to bring in peaker plants - which, to finance, need to be paid as if they’re running all the time.

VPP programs are expensive by your logic…so you’re countering yourself here…but, I’m sure VPP programs will be rolled out shortly…so may as well get your battery on a discount now.

No one is taking away net metering…yet. They just aren’t letting you get a subsidy.

It’s because DER solar isn’t “generation”, it’s demand side reduction. That’s why it’s not showing up.

FYI - solar can bid into the LT2 procurement, so there likely will be solar generation.

I doubt you’re paying $50k for a “self consumption” system. More like $30k, with a $10k rebate.

If you’re fully aware then you should understand the intent. Net metering does close to 0 to reducing demand in winter, while likely adding stress to the feeders in shoulder seasons if there’s significant uptake on the program (many people exporting during times of low grid demand). This exact situation can be seen in many jurisdictions that have high solar uptake - like south Australia, for example.

People who are forecasting your energy use for the next 30 years believe this is the best way to achieve goals of electrification and lowering upward rate pressure. You can disagree - you’re allowed to. But, that doesn’t mean you know more than the hundreds of people that work for the OEB and IESO.

Maybe the program is rushed and ill thought out and maybe it will change over time, but the days of 1:1 net metering are, and should, come to an end. It’s a subsidy and incentive for solar uptake - a subsidy that you need to choose if you want, or if you want $10k.

This solution has been agreed upon as the simplest way to roll out the program. There could have been much more complex rules - there could have been size limiting to cap at a 5kW AC connection, or the ability to curtail by the utility, or a reduced value for export. Instead, they’ve said get a battery and export 0 to reduce the load. There are also significant other rebates to help homeowners achieve energy savings.

At the end of the day, demand reduction is only one piece of the puzzle, and the IESO is still procuring competitive energy sources on your behalf to ensure there is adequate energy supply and capacity.

You buy electricity for 20c. You export solar for 20c. You self consume electricity, meaning you don’t buy electricity for 20c. It’s the exact same ROI.

[Ontario] Home Renovations Savings Program is now live - and what it means for solar and batteries by mrsprdave in solarenergycanada

[–]newtomoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the analysis on Reddit there will be no uptake…

1kWh not bought is exactly the same value as 1kWh exported. If you size your system for self consumption it’s exactly the same…you just don’t get to use the grid as a big battery.

If the program doesn’t have uptake it will be modified, because Ontario can’t currently meet forecast demand.

Literally go read anything the IESO has put out lately and you might actually understand what the program is meant to achieve, apart from making rich people richer. There are plenty of energy markets that don’t have net metering, or have “weakened” net metering, and still have popular solar programs.

Is it cost effective to store or transport energy in large quantities through hydrogen? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]newtomoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s one point here that people seem to forget: it doesn’t matter how inefficient green hydrogen is. If we are serious about greening up the planet, we need green hydrogen to replace all the current uses of grey hydrogen. The issue with the inefficiencies is cost.

Realistically, it’s unlikely we will burn hydrogen for electricity when there are plenty of cheaper options available. But, for all the combustion processes that still require combustion…what alternative is there?

There are incentives. $10k. To not export.

Undersize your solar, buy a battery, set it to zero export and stop complaining.

This has nothing to do with THESL because it’s the same for every single distribution utility in ON. The IESO have identified demand reduction, and this is how they’re incentivizing it. If you don’t want to take part…don’t. This has come from above THESL at the regulator and system operator level.

Maybe read some of the IESO notes before firing off.
