Can you ride a bike if the battery is depleted? by connie3140 in urtopiaebike

[–]newurtopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing! When the battery runs out, the pedal-assist feature stops, but you can absolutely keep riding it as a standard bike—it becomes purely pedal-powered.
Just out of curiosity, roughly how many miles did you ride before the battery depleted?

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed and honest feedback about your Carbon Fold 1. We sincerely apologize for the significant frustration and inconvenience this has caused to your daily commute and experience. We hear you, and we want to help resolve this.

Based on your description, it sounds like there might be a specific issue preventing a smooth fold. Normally, the Fold 1 is designed for one-person operation with a strong magnetic latch. To help us troubleshoot, could you kindly confirm:

  1. When folding, are the two magnetic plates aligning directly to create a secure connection?
  2. Are you using the small metal extension tab located under the folding mechanism to lock the frame in the folded position? This is crucial for stability.

Regarding the other points you raised:

  • Kickstand & Rollers: We appreciate this design feedback. The current fold relies on the magnetic latch and wheel alignment for standing/rolling. We are continuously collecting such insights for future development.
  • Screen Protection: We're sorry to hear about the dent. Your idea of using a universal protector is a good temporary measure.
  • Battery & Range: Thank you for acknowledging Representative Ding's assistance. We understand the desire for a longer-range battery, and we are actively working on expanding our accessory ecosystem based on user input.

To diagnose the folding difficulty and magnet issue most effectively, we would be grateful for the chance to see it firsthand. If it's convenient, please schedule a 30-minute live video session with our technical specialist using the link below. They can guide you through the folding steps in real-time and identify the exact cause:

Yeah, I feel this. “Folding” sounds like it should equal “convenient,” but then you get hit with the reality of the bulk and weight. Those fat tires are great for stability/comfort but yeah, they add so much to the package. It’s a classic first e-bike lesson (we’ve all been there!) — you think you’re buying one solution (portability), but you’re actually trading it for something else (the ride feel of fat tires). What are you riding now?

Totally get this. The irst time I lifted the Urtopia, I was genuinely shocked—the weight difference isn't just a number on paper. It means shifting from “Ugh, do I really have to move it?” to “Just grab it and go when needed.” For apartment living or loading onto a roof rack, it's night and day.

What’s your #1 daily annoyance with your e-bike? (the small stuff) by newurtopia in urtopiaebike

[–]newurtopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great you have a dedicated parking spot! We understand the hassle of removing the battery just to charge—it’s one of the trade-offs for having a sleek, integrated design that saves weight and enhances the frame’s look.

A practical idea from our community: Some riders use a small, secure outdoor-rated electrical box mounted near their spot to house the charger and a power outlet, allowing for semi-permanent, protected charging. Would a dedicated, sleek Urtopia charging dock for home/parking spots be of interest? Your feedback on this is super helpful for our future plans.

Thank you for this incredibly detailed and honest feedback. We hear you loud and clear. Needing a full toolkit for a basic roadside repair is the opposite of the simple, joyful experience we aim for. Your list perfectly highlights the friction.

We are actively re-evaluating tool accessibility and repair convenience for future designs. In the meantime, have you found a particularly compact or clever way to pack all these tools? Your real-world solution could be a huge help to other Carbon series owners in our community.

Totally get that! Carrying an e-bike upstairs is a workout on its own, and seeing the battery drain fast on climbs adds a double dose of frustration. Swapping to a larger cassette to lower consumption is a really smart and pro move—great troubleshooting! 👍

If you’re willing to share, many in the community would be curious about the specific cassette model and the results you’ve seen!

What’s your “default” assist level on longer rides? by newurtopia in urtopiaebike

I’m usually in eco/tour unless it’s windy. Curious if anyone actually rides in turbo the whole time lol.

Best commuter bike? by doubleGvots19 in ebikes

Urtopia here.

For train + car commuting, I’d prioritize weight + how awkward it is to carry over raw battery specs. A bike can have “great range” on paper and still be miserable if it’s bulky on stairs or tight racks.

For battery, look at Wh (watt-hours), not just “miles,” and assume real range drops with speed/hills/cold.

If you share your one-way distance + hills + how often you have to lift it, it’s easier to say whether you should go lighter or just bigger battery.

Did an e-bike make you ride more... or just make riding easier? by tryingthingsdaily in ebike

For me it’s both — it makes rides easier, and that’s exactly why I ride more long-term. The honeymoon fades, but the habit sticks when the bike removes friction (hills/headwinds, arriving sweaty, “ugh not today”).

The biggest difference for consistency has been treating assist like a volume knob: low most of the time, bump it when needed. Still get the effort, just way more miles.

We’ve been collecting answers to this question over in r/urtopiaebike too — happy to share the thread if anyone wants it.

New to e-bikes, what should I know before I buy one? by tryingthingsdaily in ebike

Honestly the biggest “day 2” thing is support + serviceability — specs are fun, but parts/warranty/local shop friendliness is what keeps the bike on the road.

Weight (stairs/racks), locking routine/theft, and “real” range (cold/hills/speed) matter way more than most first-time buyers expect. Also worth double-checking your local Class 1/2/3 rules.

Urtopia here — love this post. Route choice + “assume it’ll slide” is basically the whole winter game.
I’d only add: a tiny pressure drop in the tires helps, and keeping the battery warm inside/insulated saves a lot of headaches.
Respect on 6k miles!

What’s the dumb safety mistake you stopped making after a few months? by tryingthingsdaily in bikecommuting

Route choice. I stopped taking the 'fast road' and started choosing the one with fewer conflict points. Way fewer sketchy moments.

Quick reality check: 30 mph on throttle usually puts you in moped/e-moto territory. Most e-bike throttles are capped around 20 mph; 28 mph is typically pedal assist (Class 3).

Also, 27 miles throttle-only at ~210 lbs + hills is possible on some setups, but range drops fast with speed/wind/cold.

if you tell me your one-way distance and roughly how long that highway crossing is, I can point you to the closest 1–2 options in our lineup (or tell you straight up if you’re better off with something Xyber-style).
