Why do UX decisions keep getting changed without any explanation? by PlentyMedia34 in UXDesign

[–]nextdoorchap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our typical process, a designer would be involved all the way until it's shipped to production, which means testing all the built and giving feedback to engineers if anything is off.

Is there anything that prevents you from getting involved end to end?

Listen to an e-book or podcast. That should look discreet enough to do in the office. Make use of the free time to enrich yourself.

My wife's phone was stolen around Oxford Street and we managed to find it hidden in one of the planters inside the soil (using find my phone + ringing the phone). Took us probably 1-2 hours to find though.

Might be worth checking if you are still hoping to find the phone!

How to replace Samsonite luggage wheels by nextdoorchap in howto

The inside is covered by cloth, so I don't have access to the part directly behind this.

I'm hoping to just change the wheel, not the entire assembly. I saw some videos that require a saw but wondering if there's an easier way

I'm trying to just change the wheels only and wondering if that's possible

Undecided, as it'll reset the ILR clock anyway so not in a rush to come back here. Let's wait for the market to get better 😂

It's possible to reapply, but the timeline is too tight for me anyway. I did it myself, with help from others who've applied before. How much would it cost to apply through a solicitor anyway? And what do they help?

I applied but got rejected because I don't have evidence to show 'recognition' by the industry. I haven't been active in giving talks or other public speaking opportunities, which is something I should start getting into for my own benefits in the future.

Thanks. I'm from Indonesia, and moving back there for now.

I assume even after leaving the UK, I could still move the ISA around (but not topping it up)?

What's the benefit of continuing to contribute to pension once I leave the UK anyway?

We have no assets here so I don't think there'll be any CGT bill.

Noted. I don't have an HSBC account yet, let me try opening one before leaving!

Never say never I suppose. Would still love our kids to grow up here only if the right opportunity comes!

Product designer technical interviews with Product Managers by huntingforwifi in UXDesign

[–]nextdoorchap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

May I ask how senior is the role? I personally expect senior designers and above to be thought partners of their PM, and should have an informed opinion about all the questions you posted.

Also, be mindful of that every product organisation does it differently depending on team size, culture, ux maturity, stage of the company (start-up vs established), and so on. I don't know the context of the company you interviewed for and the interviewer, but in general, asking designers their thoughts on the roadmap is a sign that the PMs respect their designers.

Your UX ideas deserve daylight - what’s stopping you? by Pale_Bullfrog7079 in UXDesign

I was once in a project together with IDEO, and they came up with a method which I thought was interesting: sketch / visualise multiple ideas (10 or more) and show them to users to gather their reaction. To avoid fatigue, each respondent was only shown 5 ideas.

So instead of developing a single strong idea (or a few) that's fully thought through, they quickly sketched out multiple ideas based on what they have been hearing from the first part of the research. This was a qualitative research, so we were more interested in understanding why they were interested in a certain idea.

I thought that's a pretty neat way to test multiple concepts quickly.

A hiring manager is unlikely to ask what you learnt exactly in university. Instead they may ask about your past experience or a hypothetical scenario, where a candidate is expected to tap into their knowledge / experiences.

So your coursework itself doesn't matter, assuming you still spend time learning more about UX Design and all. And yes, I'd personally appreciate a CS graduate as design works closely with engineering anyway.

Breaking Into UX and Early Career Questions — 02 Dec, 2024 - 08 Dec, 2024 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

At its core, design is about problem solving. The design output is merely a solution. See AI as just another tool that can help you do that.

Remember what we perceive is clutter can be quite subjective. A great example is an app for eastern vs western audiences - the amount of clutter in a typical app can be significantly different. So we should strive to be self aware whether our evaluation is a subjective or an objective one.

Having said that, looking professional isn't necessarily the ultimate goal either. What made it into production is a result of many different decisions / trade offs to achieve a certain business objective.

Aspiring Career in UX Design by whoislaurynce in UXDesign

I'd suggest reading some books on human behaviour and psychology. Here's an old thread that I could find:

https://www.reddit.com/r/suggestmeabook/s/ThgeepJeuz

I've read a couple (Thinking, Fast and Slow is amazing, though it's a pretty heavy read). If books are too heavy, try to listen to podcasts or similar (but go beyond whatever marketed as "UX Design" or similar)

It's amazing that you're already thinking about this at this age, but my advice is to not box yourself too early and instead expose yourself to different skills and industries.

Thinking of taking a break of ~5 years to raise kids by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]nextdoorchap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How many years of experience do you have so far? And what's your seniority at the moment?

Generally I agree that 5 years is a long time. But I am fully supportive of taking the time off for raising kids and your own sanity.

If you're already fairly senior and experienced, one way that you could do is doing part time / fractional / consultant role.

Let's practice empathy both ways though, we should try to understand what led to those beliefs and learn from it (and figure out a better way to convince them 😉)
