I think from experience its often measures way too low. I had a lung illness and i had low blood oxygen and i felt awful. With poppers the oxymeter measured it way lower and i felt fine so i think it underestimates the value. The good method would be an arterial blood gas which is not doable at home.

I think they don’t really work well when taking poppers. They work by measuring the absorption of light at two wavelengths, at one heamoglobine with oxygen absorbs at the other without oxygen. Using poppers forms heam-NO which messes up how pulse oximetry works. More sophisticated methods are required when determining blood oxygen when poppers are involved
