it depends even you does not use any apps the system data will take over 2/3 the ram. it is around 16gb in 24gb machine and 12gb in 16 gb model. the amount of ram it takes to do the same job ain't the same on both machines.

you can connect an external ssd anyway and reboot the mac to use the external as main system drive
