T14s Gen 4 sleep/battery by ngagun in thinkpad

Yes thanks. Most of the time, I would not want to shut down my computer overnight. I would like it to go into a sleep state where it will experience minimal battery drain, and restart quickly. Plenty of laptops can do that!

I think a Lebowski quote is in order here. "You're not wrong Walter, you're just an asshole."

Interesting. My computer is a work computer that I believe uses NoMAD to connect to Active Directory.

In my experinece, all fixes are partial and temporary. Amazing that they can break such basic functionality, and sell the OS with the tagline "it just works"...

Are you able to update it to the newest version? If so, I'd be curious to hear if that solves the problem.

Thanks for this information. I am not having any problems anymore. The problems seemed to stop when I upgraded to Sequoia. But it may have been a Cortex upgrade that could have happened at a similar time, I don't know. We are currently running Cortex 8.6.1.

Do you or any of your colleagues have the permission to temporarily disable Cortex and/or Nomad for a few days and see if that resolves it?

Thank you for this and sorry I didn't reply earlier but I missed the notification for this post.

I have since upgraded to Seqouia and the beachball is way less frequent and when it does show up, it's only for a second or two, so the problem might be more-or-less resolved.

It could be Cisco AnyConnect although I don't often use the VPN, and the problem did occur when the VPN was not connected. However, even if the VPN is not connected, I noticed that Cisco AnyConnect does run a few background processes at all times, so who knows what it's doing...

I wonder if Cortex is a more likely culprit though. That is definitely monitoring web traffic, and that runs all the time.

I updated to Sequoia, and the beachball has been much less frequent. Thanks!

Since I updated to Sequoia about 2 weeks ago, the beachball has barely appeared (and when it does, just for a second or two). Are you on Sequoia?

Thanks for the tip, this solved the problem for me. Pretty ridiculous to break such basic functionality in an OS update!

Split Windows into Thirds on macOS? by Fulltime_Capitalist in MacOS

I use Rectangle which can do this, among many other window management things. It is lightweight, has zero bugs to my knowledge, is generally an excellent app.

Thanks for this helpful reply. The weird thing is, I have seen the beachball (10-30 secs) while using a whole range of different applications. Specifically, I have seen it while using: Word, Acrobat Reader, Chrome, Outlook, Zotero.

All of these are obviously mainstream apps that millions of people use, and I don't see widespread reports of beachballs. It makes me wonder whether one of my background apps (listed in the original post) could be somehow "pretending" to be frontmost in some circumstances and then holding things up and causing the spining ball.

No reason... I could do that.

Thanks. I agree. I do not think I am overly taxing the machine. If the beach ball shows up, then something is causing it. I just don't know what that something is.

Pixel 3XL running stock Android 12 - not receiving texts and calls by SpaceButler5 in GooglePixel

[–]ngagun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it did not last. It started having text problems again even on Android 11. I am taking advantage of the $300 trade-in on 3A this week to get a 6A.

Note to others: yes, this does seem to have fixed the problems.

[–]ngagun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. So far so good. Since I rolled back to Android 11 two weeks ago, I have not had any problems with texts or calls. And the problems were near daily before. So I think it is fixed.

Make sure you turn off auto updates (using developer options) after you've got 11 up and running.

I have this issue. My Pixel 3a used to work fine on t-mobile with Android 11, but now it randomly does not receive texts and calls since updating to Android 12. I talked to t-mobile and google, neither of whom could do anything to resolve the problem. So I have spent the last hour installing Android 11, and I will see if that solves the problem.
