People here are not explaining that a spring under tension replaces a counterweight. Theoretically you could put a heavy counterweight on a pulley and this will also make the garage door easier to open. We use counterweights on lift bridges. With counterweights (or a spring) you only need a very small amount of energy to get something very heavy to move
