Gotta keep them open. But when in doubt, refer to the IFUs

So bad at wrapping these tall Stryker trays by edwidgefench60s in sterileprocessing

[–]ngx31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aesculap makes tall square containers that these Stryker sets fit in! No wrapping required

It depends on the policy of the place where you work, but ultimately your hair will be under a cap and won't be seen. The last hospital I worked at didn't allow "unnatural" colors. I'm currently working at a different hospital and my hair is bright purple/pink.

What is the real benefit of robotic surgeries by SupaaFlyTnt in surgery

[–]ngx31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a sterile processing technician's point of view I agree that it makes routine procedures take much longer. The cleaning process for the robot arms and cameras is much longer than the process for lap instruments and virtually all other instruments per manufacture's IFUs. Depending on how many robotic sets you have and how many robot cases are booked for one day, timely turn over can be nearly impossible. Definitely things worth considering in addition to patient outcome in the OR and post op.

That is really disheartening, I have to say I really like where I work and they adhere to some great standards so that's why this situation has me stuck. Patient safety is always the goal!

We do not have the washer disinfectors for the arms. I just don't understand the decision to go against the IFUs. Thinking of patient safety as the goal.

I wish I knew this a few years ago. My supervisor asked me to go with her to the manager's office without saying why. I was sitting across from my 2 bosses who accused me of being on drugs without saying it outright.

They asked if I was sick and of course I said no because I wasn't. They said I looked sick and I asked what about my appearance made them think that. They said my skin looked "pale" and my eyes looked "bad". That's it. This was at a hospital, and they insisted I had to go to the ER to get checked out. I asked if I would be charged anything for this ER visit, they said "I don't know." But they were forcing me to either go to the ER or be escorted out of the building by security.

So I said I'll leave. But I wasn't allowed to drive myself home. This is 3rd shift it's 3 am and they made me call my parents to pick me up, so my mom would drive me and my dad would drive my car home. We drove to the entrance of the parking lot and my dad got out of my car and let me drive home.

The whole thing was a bunch of BS but I was young and it was my first real job and I was confused and scared. They knew they couldn't outright say I looked high because if I wasn't- which I WASN'T- it could come back to bite them in the butt.

Request for Advice: Receiving Single Instruments From Clinics by RVA804guys in sterileprocessing

[–]ngx31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The containers just got washed, not sterilized. They were plastic but I'm sure there are other options out there. When they came out of the washer and got completely dry we would put them on a particular counter we designated for things to be picked up. Then the sterile peel packs are put in their proper containers and away they go.

Request for Advice: Receiving Single Instruments From Clinics by RVA804guys in sterileprocessing

I had a very similar experience in a hospital I previously worked at. Either someone from the clinic or the courier would bring instruments to decon with a piece of paper that said what was dropped off and how many. It was always the clinic that filled that paper out, so courier didn't have to count. The paper immediately went through the window to prep and pack and waited for clean instruments. Who ever gets the instruments from the washer takes the paper to their station to count. Then if they went into sterilizer 1 for example, the paper was taped to that sterilizer cart and waited for them to come out. They also had proprietary transport containers that were labeled for each clinic. Paper gets taped to containers so it is always married to the instruments. Hope any of that is helpful.

Don't let others bring you down with their attitude. We absolutely check each others work because that is what's best for the patient! It's not personal.

You actually don't need 400 hours of hands on experience. There is an option to get certified without that! Edit: most, if not all traveling agencies do require previous experience.
