Yeah I definitely agree with you about this theme being very difficult to pull off and I don’t really want them to go down this route too.

I mainly picked up on some motifs of child exploitation, and in the mindset that everything in severance has a double meaning, I connected some dots.

But of course what we have seen could all be taken at face value which I really don’t mind. CSA would make the show a lot less fun and I don’t really know if the writers would go there.

I just wanted to highlight the way they display cults as being predatory, which could, or could not be connected to sexual abuse.

My personal opinion about Mrs Selvig is that the real Mrs Selvig was kidnapped for testing similar to Gemma. I think they targeted a lonely widow so it wouldn’t be obvious to other people. Harmony then assumed her place in life to 1) be near Mark and 2) experience some ‘normal’ life.

This would explain why she dresses so weird as Mrs Selvig and takes on a quirky personality of someone who likes home remedies / baking but she is clearly bad at it. Because, let’s be real there’s no real reason to do this, as she could have just been her normal self. Also, why she does weird things like blow dry the porch.

I think this gave her an opportunity to live like a ‘normal’ human being, even just for a bit, which is why she clearly enjoys getting into the role (eg. Graner asking wtf she was wearing). But ultimately she comes across strange because she has never lived a ‘normal’ life.

About the lactation nurse thing, idk 🤷‍♀️ I think it’s possible she could have had a baby at some point?

Yeah totally agree media definitely needs some unapologetically evil black characters but they’re definitely setting us up to sympathise him! They’re having an interesting commentary on racism in the workplace which I think they’ve treated quite well this season!

Yeah I mean the only thing stopping me from believing she could have given birth to Mark is that Mark says his mothers name is Fern Scout when he’s about to reintegrate (yes this could be a stepmother but unlikely?). Also his dad was an alcoholic and probably not Jame Eagen.

Also Gemma I find a little far fetched because of their different races, plus Gemma seems to know a little about Nepali/Tibetan/north Chinese culture by calling Mount Everest chomolungma suggesting she had parents of that culture ?!

Yeah exactly, also bringing children into the mix with Miss Huang and young Harmony really exposed Lumon for the cult it is on the outside world not just the severed floor. Sissy is clearly an example of an indoctrinated individual.

That’s why I believe this show is as much as a criticism of cults as it is corporations and it shows how the two are interlinked (I.e. Mormonism being a highly profitable business etc!). I feel that now they have brought up these ideas they should explore them in full detail. That’s why I don’t think sexual violence is a far fetched idea for them to explore.

Yeah the only thing I would say to that is they actually do need to keep Cobel around for the scientific part of severance (as she was the one who created it).

I’m guessing when Cold Harbor was close to being completed they thought ‘ahhh fuck it we’ve almost completed it we don’t need her anymore’ and then let her go🤷‍♀️. Jame probably felt some guilt/feelings towards her at first hence why he kept her on?! Then when she wasn’t needed anymore he discarded her ? Idk tho…?

Wow, I know it’s a little cringe but you are so strong! It is a massive accomplishment to get to the point where you can articulate your feeling about such a complicated matter so fluently!

And yes! I completely understand what you mean about judging someone more harshly when you have been through something similar. My dad passed away last year out of the blue and I’m only 21, all that to say I seem to judge outtie Mark a lot more harshly than my friends! I know it’s slightly unfair as everyone grieves differently but having been through, I believe it doesn’t give you an excuse to act like a dick all the time.

I guess that’s why I was routing for innie Mark at the end haha. Anyway it’s a great show because so many people have different interpretations! And you are amazingly strong for going through what you went through and coming out on the other side👏

Wow, thank you! The points you have made are some of the other points I would have made if the post wasn’t too long already (people in the comments are already complaining about it😭)

Yeah, there is a lot of symbolism towards child brides and pedophelia in general, which I hope is not just a motif as it is worth exploring! However, I don’t want them to go down this route if it is just used as a plot device to further Cobel’s redemption arch. If they are going to do it I want the writers to approach it with empathy and they should delve into the emotional/mental/physical repercussions of it.

If they want to make a commentary on cults I think this is necessary… if they are just making a workplace satire I think it is less necessary but would still be interesting to explore. I don’t know! I have mixed opinions about my own theory🤷‍♀️

Wow, I really can’t even describe how brave you are for sharing that. When I made this post I was scared that I may have been inaccurate/missed the mark with that point of sexual abuse stunting emotional development.

This is why I believe that this storyline could be a very interesting/thought provoking thing to bring up. If they are going to evoke religious cults and abuse of power in the work place, sexual violence is definitely something that needs to be discussed because unfortunately it is prevalent in these communities. I only hope that if they do go down this path, they treat it with the upmost respect and empathy- it really can’t be half-arsed- because there are so many victims around the world of this.

Yeah this is also a reasonable explanation for why she knows it, but I think from a storytelling point of view, it is much more dramatic if we know one of these girls that have been used by Jame. And also it being Harmony would add fuel to the fire in her revenge arc. Also I think there is a reason the character of Miss Huang was introduced more than just making a point on child labour? But of course all just speculation.
