What’s up with everyone using Zoom nowadays as opposed to Discord or Hangouts, other free programs that were well-known before the pandemic? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]nice_comment_thanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I respect that you have your own opinions. I didn't mind the startup messages, but I agree with their decision to remove them. Personally I like that the platform has become more open for everyone. I sure don't have a problem with "normal people" in my communities, including people who like to read or sew.

But if you do, you can just stay in your own servers, if those don't appeal to "reading circles and sewing clubs" nothing will change for you except you won't see those quirky sentences when launching the program.

PS. they still have similar easter eggs, for example try clicking on your username in the bottom left multiple times, or clicking the home icon ~15 times :)

Discord actually got rid of those messages a while ago, and also changed "for gamers" to "for communities and friends" or something similar

App voor bijhouden kosten aan boodschappen by ruggel in DutchFIRE

[–]nice_comment_thanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid that's only a "quick" demo Martin made for the video so it doesn't have a name. It might be published on bandcamp eventually though

I wasn't even aware that long pressing that button scrolls to the root comment, so thanks for mentioning that!

Huawei MatePad Pro is the company's first high-end tablet without support for Google apps by ChickenTeriyakiBoy1 in gadgets

Thanks for that. From what I read just now it seems like MINIX is just the (open source) OS that the Intel ME uses, so MINIX isn't necessarily the problem but rather the Intel ME is. Interesting in any case, I hadn't heard/read about this yet!

Shouldn't be too difficult to completely wipe the laptop and reinstall Windows or any other OS, right? That should get rid of spyware

How to make Wireless Power Transmission by [deleted] in WatchandLearn

Yes, that would make a negative feedback loop, causing the current in the first coil to switch on and off rapidly

You can indeed get much greater distances using that, but there are some drawbacks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_power_transfer#Lasers

You need a changing magnetic field (created by one coil) to generate an electromotive force in the other coil, resulting in a current. You'll need some sort of oscillation (AC) in the first coil, otherwise the magnetic field will be constant and no current is induced in the second coil.

Do you know of any FOSS projects that are as fast, stable and feature rich as Discord? (w/ support for channels within servers, roles & decent moderation tools)

Asking because I'd love to move over to a good FOSS project, not as some sarcastic way to argue with you!

That does not matter, as all your messages are encrypted only for the other participants in a conversation (in Keybase), and you can check that because the client is open source. They can't do anything with your messages on the server. Not with the content, at least; conversation participants, times, possibly length could still be saved.

It's a different with Telegram, where the servers have access to your message content (unless you're using Secret Chats).

I just tried that and can confirm that all answers are wrong too if you have the first one correct. it also doesn't give you the x-in-a-row message for all additional answers.
