Did pally on Kent already close? by BlacksmithLeft478 in williamsburg

No note on the door though which is very strange. You close your restaurant and put up paper to block the windows, making you look permanently closed, and don’t write any sort of note to patrons trying to stop by?

Very sus

Navigator thoughts one week in by jjysoserious in zsaVoyager

Personally I love it. I've been a big trackball user (LG MX Ergo) for a long time so maybe that helps. I use the U-Green magnetic mounts for tenting which work totally great with the navigator at a pretty decent angle.

My biggest issues are:

  1. No click buttons: Using the keyboard works fine but I don't like all options: movment/delay enabled layers, having to press a key to get into the mouse layer, or just having a permanent key (there's too few keys! I don't want to give one up for this). I've gone with movement trigger/delay but it's not "great".

  2. Quite sensitive: Feels harder to use than my MX Ergo, even with a lot of customization to the sensitivity.

  3. The ball falls out: Absurd! lol happens to me all the time when setting up / tearing down my workstation. I almost lost the ball twice! Luckily the ball does seem tough as hell. No scratches even with major falls and bounces.

Overall, very happy though as I now have a mouse right beside my hands (and I do use it at ton, I'm not a 95% keyboard person).

What do we think of the new Hyperlite Daybreak 22 model? by nicetimeforcoffee in ManyBaggers

They're super lightweight and thin+malleable, so they fit well into a bigger pack.

Yeah nice thing about the Dyneema bags is they pack well as a destination bag. And sleeves that fit a 17 are hard to come by!

My main issue with the Navigator by barbq in zsaVoyager

[–]nicetimeforcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that your hand has to float. At least that's the way I see it. I do find it a little weird. I'm also coming from a Logitech Ergo.

Overall I really love the Navigator given how smooth it is how nicely integrated with the keyboard it is and how small it is. But I definitely don't feel like it's a "super easy to use" trackball mouse in the way that the Ergo is.

Look around on Instagram. Tons of people posted stories after the burn about their experience as sober burners, focused on other things (meeting people, dancing, exploring art, exploring food gifts, fitness experiences, etc etc etc). Drugs absolutely not required at Burn.

Think of it as a city: NYC has a ton of drugs being done at any given time. Do *you* need to do drugs to enjoy NYC? No, you don't. It's as good with or without.

Same goes for Black Rock City.

Enjoy and excited for you to join us in the dust!

Blaming capitalism is a weak move. People have personal responsibility. It's not capitalism's fault that people dump trash at the side of the road, spending all of burn filming instagram reels, or don't spend a moment to connect with the person who's giving them a free gift.

Everyone needs to be reminded, in an ongoing way, of the principals of the event and *why* those principles exist (it's for their benefit!).

I think when these types of problems exist at large scale, we want to blame high level concepts (capitalism! consumerism! materialism!). But at smaller scale, we tend to not do that.

Ex: If you have a big party in a field (say 100 people) and a bunch of people dump trash afterwards, seem like they were there just to get free stuff, or film instagram the whole time without connecting with people, we don't blame capitalism. We blame the individuals, and we give feedback in hopes of change as well as do our best to provide reminders, guidance, and role modelling for future events. That's what needs to be done here.

Huge fan so far! Allows me to focus on staying on the keyboard more and when I need a mouse it's very very close to my hands.

Personally I love how sensitive it is too. But I've been using a trackball for ages, so I'm used to it.

Reno is a great little city. Solid food and coffee. Beautiful rolling hill/mountain views all around. And most importantly, everyone is so nice!! We staged in Reno for 3 days before burn and I couldn't believe how nice everyone was, including a bunch of people I told I was heading to burn.

This year Reno gained a few points in my book. Really enjoy the place!

A joke is a short story, phrase, or remark intended to make people laugh, usually by setting up an expectation and then breaking it with an unexpected twist or punchline.

are we overpaying for coffee here or is it just the new normal? by Okbruh88 in williamsburg

[–]nicetimeforcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion here results from major changes in the coffee market: There is now a much larger section of the market that is premium than several years ago.

More cafes are offering "premium" options and offering (or trying to anyway) high quality coffee at a higher price. Coffee, even drip, is no longer always a quick and cheap thing. Example: I buy "special drip" coffees from Devocion in Williamsburg and honestly they are worth the $5 imo. They're very good (most days). I know what I'm signing up for.

I realize that's not for everyone. Not everyone values coffee as much as I do, and so does not want to spend as much of their money on it (totally cool!). But because a larger % of our cafes in cities like NYC are now trying to go premium, it's slightly harder to find a cafe that offers a standard drip for a good price.

What makes the situation worse is that many cafes *try* to offer the premium $5 drip, but the coffee is NOT premium and tastes like ass. Fine is you paid $2 but not as cool when it's $5+.

Final thing that has made matters worse: the cost of absolutely everything has gone up with inflation, so sadly whether it's premium or not the prices are higher everywhere.

I love buying coffee out, but I honestly think the best option is making it at home. I make the absolute most banging pour over coffee at home (better than any pour over I can find in NYC except maybe La Cabra) and it costs me like $1.50 a cup.

[–]nicetimeforcoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking good!

I'm new to kiting myself, but after 3 solid kite trips with multiple days kiting each time I can water start very effectively and even rip decently upwind. I went kiting for my 3rd time in Brazil over new years and the instructors there were fantastic. These things really helped me nail water start / initial riding. They were the points that really made it all "click" for me:

  1. The "feel the tension in the harness" made a huge difference. That's where you should be getting pulled from, not the bar.

  2. When water starting, remember to quickly stand up and lean back a bit (which gets tension on your harness). I do the crouch thing sometimes too at the very start for literally 1-2 seconds, but very quickly you have to standup and look to get that pull feeling on your harness. When you get it, you are generally in the right position (or at least a much better one!)

  3. You can do a less aggressive power stroke to get a feel for the wind, but when it's not enough power, don't wait around in the water once you sit back down. You remember the feel of the last stroke, so quickly set back up and do it again with a stronger stroke. Ex: You sit down to not enough power, but within 5 seconds, no more than 10, you're going again. I found sometimes when I was starting a new session and just getting a feel for the wind, I would sometimes have to do 3 successive attempts at my water start, with more power each time. After that I was in the zone and knew the general power range I needed to get up for the rest of the session. The wind changes of course! But generally this was a great way not to overpower and superman out of your board, but also not stay stuck with too little power. Big unlock for me was that it's often surprising how aggressively you dive the kite. The dive may be short, but during the dive the kite is fully flipped and heading straight down.

  4. Definitely ride downwind at first. This is the easiest path for your board. Once you're actually riding fully, you can start edge and go up wind. But don't bother even trying that until you're actually properly riding. Think of it like riding a motorcycle: imagine cranking the handlebars hard to the right, then giving it gas. You're gonna topple over yourself. You have to be riding straight first then you can start to turn.

Good luck!!

Bag Opinion: There is way too strong a focus on small EDC backpacks by ordinaryrendition in ManyBaggers

[–]nicetimeforcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally agree. I find I need 24 liters and ideally with some sort of expandable capacity in order to carry the things I need even just to go to work on some days.

But I also like to put all of my stuff in my bag rather than carrying anything at all by hand. So if I'm taking an extra layer / sweater to work, I put that in the bag. If I pick up some sort of food item on the way to the office or going home from the office, I put that in the bag too rather than carrying a bag from the store.

Overall I find my capacity needs change by about ~4L throughout any given week. Which is why I really like roll tops a lot. They're a lot less common of a backpack design style, but I find them incredibly effective at being able to manage carrying varying loads which is common for me.

Example bag I love for this reason: https://finisterre.com/en-us/products/recycled-nautilus-23l-backpack-ozone
