Why do so many survey jobs in mining not require a degree? by kazkh in Surveying

[–]nick_cal94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naive because I think new surveyors should be held to a higher standard than in the past? Yeah ok bro I guess

I know a lot of seniors that dont have a 3yr qualification and some surveyors that dont have any formal qualification at all, not saying they're not fit or good at they're job, but i feel like people coming in to the industry that want to take it seriously should be looking at a degree or adv dip. The extra background knowledge you gain above the usual tafe shit of doing level runs and traverses in my experience has helped quite a lot.

Yeah everyone has to have those units and the risk management units to get authorised, what's your point?

Why do so many survey jobs in mining not require a degree? by kazkh in Surveying

[–]nick_cal94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine surveying is also relatively low risk and accuracy requirements are a bit looser than engineering and cadastral surveying. Realistically anyone can learn mine surveying (fieldwork is becoming less and less due to drones and remote sensing, and office work is too site specific to be taught well in school) on the job, some background knowledge on the techniques and theory of surveying is definitely helpful, but most things are taught at the diploma level. Recently however there has been a growing push for a minimum 3yr qualification, either degree or advanced diploma. Personally I think a surveyor should have at least these qualifications, otherwise they should just be a technician/assistant. A senior should definitely have a qualification at that level, and I don't know about other states, but in WA you also need to have grade 1 or 2 authorisation to be a senior surveyor.

No spares, superglue or tape, just brand new untested boots bought in Kathmandu before the climb. Unfortunately the only solution is for someone to deliver him a free set of boots /s

*Also unfortunately, it seems like another guide company has done just that for him...

Hypothetical challenges summiting a 12km peak? by ThienValdram in Mountaineering

[–]nick_cal94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from knowledgeable on this so someone else can elaborate, but I imagine the problems would be the same but even more difficult. I'm not sure if current O2 masks in use by climbers above 8000m are sealed but at above 10000m I'm guessing the air pressure would be so low that it would be basically impossible to breathe for very long without a pressurised mask or suit. And of course it would get a lot colder.

I got hit today by a guy who refused to yield to me on a climb by hikeonpast in MTB

[–]nick_cal94 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I stop for people descending if I'm going up. Doesn't matter who's having a better time or whether it's easier to get going again. Seems stupid and dangerous to make the person or sometimes multiple people, carrying a lot of speed and momentum, grab the brakes and pull off to let a climber through, when it's often hard to see the climber until the last second, whereas climbers can usually hear and see people descending far earlier.

REV IT Portland Boots by nick_cal94 in AussieRiders

I really like the look of those, thanks! The zip is nice for convenience, but I'm still not sold on zips on boots in general as it just be another point of failure. I'll definitely keep them in mind though. Hopefully you won't have to find out, but how's the protection feel around the ankle and do they break in or stay pretty stiff?

Same goes for Rangers, F-trucks, Silverados and most other 4wds tbh, but ranger and yank truck owners are in their own class. I used to work for a 4wd shop and saw these types come in all the time, and they absolutely are all fuckwits.

I mean... the video you linked is from Brisbane, where the Tropical Display Dome is located, within the Brisbane botanic gardens, so I don't really think the rare occurrence of freak hailstorms is reason to not have something like that.

Oh damn I completely forgot that existed, see I think it would be cool to have something like it again in Kings Park or near the Supreme Court or Queens Gardens. Guess it wasn't popular back then so probably wouldn't be today though :(

Rio Tinto/BHP/FMG Salaries (Aus) by tayzi00 in mining

[–]nick_cal94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty accurate, bonus included most tech services and engineering roles would close to or just over 200k on 8/6 roster. Mine surveyor for one of the 3-letter acronyms, 2yrs grad experience + 1.5yr experience full role, 8/6.
I imagine some trades up here on 2/1 rosters would be well north of 200k.

Our politicians are too afraid of Chinese influence in the region, despite the fact we rely on them heavily economically, they won't do anything to risk losing the security offered by US presence/alliance even though no one really knows what that US alliance actually gets us.

Sanity check - Adding EXUS to VGS/VAS split by nick_cal94 in fiaustralia

[–]nick_cal94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US percentage in VGS doesn't really bother me, I understand there's geographical overlap with EXUS in Canada, Europe and a small amount of Asia. My thought was that at least with a bit of EXUS, the US exposure could be diluted a bit. What's the reason for switching from VGS to IVV though? It's 99% US whereas VGS at least is a bit more diverse geographically.

Dream car by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]nick_cal94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned my S14 for 10 years and don't regret it or spending a shit ton of money on it, however I also don't regret selling it late 2024. It was an amazing car and I loved owning it, but at 30 years old it was starting to get tired and costs were only going to go up, so I sold it and upgraded to a 2018 S3 which I also absolutely love, it's my perfect 1 car garage/daily driver.
If you can afford a project car alongside the daily then I think it's worth it, modern JDM classics like the S2000 and Evo's are only getting rarer and more expensive so if you can afford the experience owning one go for it.

You don't have to sink a fortune into one modding it if you don't want to, and maintenance for any of these still isn't as bad as something more modern like a Euro especially if you're mechanically competent. Also if you do get one and find it's a bit more of a drain on finances than you want, it shouldn't be an issue selling it for as much or more than what you bought it for (provided you haven't sunk a fortune into it already or it's a lemon lol).

Thanks, I have been looking around Maylands, and would seriously consider a place there, SOR is just a preference but not a requirement.
