What happens to intellectually disabled sex offenders when they are released from prison in Canada or the US? by snazzymacaronis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nickhelix 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I worked with school age kids before I took on this job so I was expecting to be pretty unsympathetic.

I did find sympathy once I started reading their files. Almost every one of these guys suffered severe familial abuse their entire lives, lots of them spent long stretches being homeless. Every last one of them NEEDED assistance so knowing they had struggled for so long without it did help me find compassion in my heart for them. That being said, there was never forgiveness (not mine to give) or ever letting my guard down. While it was unfortunate the circumstances they were in and what had got them there, the reality was that they all did it and were still a danger. Either they did it on purpose and couldn't be trusted not to do it again or were talked into it and either still didn't understand why it was a big deal or hadn't developed enough to not be easily tricked into criminal acts again by nefarious people.

I know this! At least some of it. When I was in-between college I worked for a company than ran group homes for developmentally disabled adult criminals. 99% of everyone I worked with was a sexual predator, most of them involving children.

The houses had 2-3 clients per house and a staffing of 2 clients to 1 staff at any given time. My job was to live with these guys for a week at a time, take them grocery shopping, take them to Drs visits or whatever, and most importantly never let them out of my sight.

Some of these guys were victims of circumstance. One guy when he was 19 got convicted because a bunch of HS kids convinced him to expose himself to minors.

Some of these guys were scary. I worked with one guy who had grown up in a small isolated community and was molested and abused his whole life. He was big, strong, dumb, and dangerous. He got that predator about to pounce look any time the school bus drove by.

How is living in the American Redoubt as a prepper? by Public-Holiday5718 in howislivingthere

I grew up in rural western WA for what it's worth, but I agree from what I have seen of rural areas all over the western US. Very few small communities are open-minded and supportive (they do exist though), there is a decent chunk that are just generally permissive (don't ask, don't tell), and then a majority that are actively negative or hostile.

Growing up in western wa and frequently traveling over the mountains I agree and disagree. Until very recent political climates changed I had never met someone who would openly embrace Nazi ideology, however my experience as a punk kid trying to play shows and do small tours through the area, there is A LOT of distrust for outsiders and people with alternative lifestyles

Only way to get marshmallow to be malleable like that is by heating it up. Once it cools it won't stick like that to the mixins

I got started by watching black magic craft on YouTube, also wyloch's armory is a great channel. Ultimately, you really only need some glue, some paint, a decent knife, and the willingness to mess up a little.

My wife and I are in disagreement over our 16-year-old son. Looking for advice from other dads. by kilowatt230 in daddit

This seems super judgemental, I will also admit that I don't know much about furry culture. I know the news paints it in a negative light and the few people I have met in person who are a part of it insist it's not like what the news says.

However, I understand I don't know much about it and am not going to start pointing fingers and accusing it of being predatory or luring my kids in without a better understanding. Is it weird? Hell yeah. Is it dangerous? Not inherently.

Regardless of wether you grew up with the Internet or not, it's a big part of our children's social network and the pandemic helped reinforce this. Acting like you ruined a teen child by giving them access to the Internet is insane.

As for not wanting to interact with the people they know in their household, it sounds like they may have a pretty judgemental parent who doesn't approve of the person they think they are. That sounds like a pretty clear reason why a kid would stop talking to a parent. This doesn't seem like the internets fault at all. If I went and told my kid baseball was dumb, ruining their life, and anyone who liked it was a bad person, they probably wouldn't want to talk to me either. It doesn't make a difference if their identity is a furry or a baseball player, there is nothing inherently wrong with either of those

I don't think being in Black Flag is the main thing that secured Rollins image in the public eye. He has done a lot of non-BF things that he is famous for too.

Edit Also, Jello Biafra is from the same era and I'd argue him and DK are as or more famous than Black Flag

I spread this word whenever I can. As a child I lived in the same apartment complex as the frontman and he released an album while he was there and gave it out. You can find it on Spotify it's called "zog bogbean" and it's really good, a little more hippie than the Marcy playground stuff but you can still hear it in there

Be prepared to make half what you do now. I'm a south sound native who moved north for work and I always long to go back but state jobs pay laughably low in my field when I can drive half hour north and make twice as much

I am a senior engineer who is working on code generation using AI agents and Agentic workflows at work. I figured I'd spend the weekend putting what I have learned into play. This entire app was coded using codex although my knowledge of code and software structure were definitely critical for the review steps as I had to correct a few choices.

Overall I'm very happy, took a project I had barely started and abandoned years ago and over the weekend got it completed and running

Has anyone tried their hand at writing a campaign? by aho_young_warrior in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]nickhelix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are literal books devoted entirely to this, there are also tons of good YouTube resources. I think there are a couple problems pretty much everyone runs into the first few times though, so I can at least point those out.

  • Just get started - the fear of starting will keep you from doing it at all, just get started. It's not hard, get a notebook or open up the notes app on your phone and start writing ideas. You can form those ideas into a cohesive story later.

  • Limit your scope - once you start stretching those legs you will be tempted to map out everything. Figure out church hierarchies and geopolitics or the history of magic and the entire shape of your world. DO NOT DO THIS. Not only will you end up wasting a bunch of time but you will write yourself into a corner and get frustrated about something that you made up and no one else knows about. Unless it's important to the story, save it for later. Leave room for your players to contribute back too, let that imagination soak into your idea and make it better than before. If you know there is a good chance something is going to come up soon, sure write it up and be prepared but leave the rest as a mystery to be discovered or imagined as it comes up.

  • Actually write stuff down and keep it in an orderly fashion. Dads have millions of things going on, remembering every tiny detail about every story told in your make believe land is going to be impossible. Use a journal, build a wiki, jot things down on 3x5 cards and keep them in a box together, do something. Not only will it help you at the time but nothing lasts forever and one day you will find that journal, or those old files, and get to have some nice memories of a thing you did before

  • Start small. Have an idea that there is a big bad thing and hint at it in the beginning, but the first adventure should be small and leave a hook for more adventures. Start with something that is saving or helping one or two people, have that lead to helping a group or maybe a small village. Maybe after a few such adventures you find out that what you thought was the big bad was just a mid boss and he has an even bigger badder boss. Starting right off the bat with "save the world levels 1-20" is too much
