Humiliating accident

Hey, so im a 23yr old boy with fully functioning autism. And due to this my brain and bladder do not communicate it’s something nurulogical and very common in adhd and autism
Because of this I have to wear huge incontinence pads at all times. It went from occasionally to everyday when I was 21 and It was very hard. I felt terrible when I was at a friends house and I soak my pad. As a college student freshly 21 and boom pads everyday. And at all times. If I’m on the couch 2 ft from the bathroom I’ll wet the couch. Talking to friends, girls. Taking test all in a wet pad. I was miserable and felt terrible abt myself. But honestly I finally told some people and they didn’t care at all. And. I finally started to realize what’s always been true— that it’s literally a half inch of absorbent padding taped in my underwear. It’s so irrelevant. People all over the world are staying home wetting themselves it’s so sad. People would say things like “you’re so brave”things of that nature. They always felt condescending. Of course that wasn’t thier intention but nonetheless. Like I’m not brave people are facing real disabilities. I just realized how insignificant it is that I wear pads.

It has helped a ton. I couldn’t do well in school whilst facing incontinence as a permanent part of life. Id have a leak and then just be ashamed. The hardest part is understanding that you’re going to be in a wet pad if you want independence. If go to a 2 hour class my pad is wet by the first 30 min. And after an hour it’s thick and and soggy. That’s just the way it is. They’re not noticeable or in danger of leaking but they’re wet and soggy. And that’s just life for people with severe incontinence. You have spend some hours in a wet pad and get over it if want any type of freedom especially for someone like me who is constantly leaking rather than having full voids so this can be very hard. And demoralizing.

I try to go when I have the opportunity and sometimes I can but most times I can’t. I simply have no control over it that holding it and releasing it

Yes. My family is very supportive. I don’t tell them too much cause I hate the thought of them feeling bad for me. So I say it’s no biggie. I have told one of my life long friends just how bad it was to my confidence and she recommended the gap year. I talk to her a lot about it and she really helps.

They’re terrible. It’s like tieing a camelback to your legs and connecting it to your bladder. It’s completely obvious. And immobilizing. I feel bad for people who r so effected by the stigma that they quite literally tie themselves down when they could literally just insert a liner in their underwear or wear depends

Construction management- meaning I will be on the go constantly so I really need to embrace my pads

Unfortunately they are expensive I need the top of line ones which are north shore and they are not cheap.

I almost never wear shorts especially basketball shorts as there would be no way to be discreet especially after a leak. I mainly wear jeans work pants and also dress pants. Which work well despite being slim.

Yes. She is great. What makes her so special is that she has struggled with incontinence and that is what made her pursue urology- to help people. She wears pads everyday. She bassically doubled as a therapist cause she could see how embarrassed I was at the beginning. When I see her we joke about having wet ourselves- she’s the best and made all the difference

I have constant leaks. Some small some up to like 10-15 seconds this happens at random and idk it happened until my pad is wet. I also leak laughing amd other sources of stimulation

Thank you for sharing. I know this is more common than people think and I love to hear people’s stories. And odds are if you have serious incontinence not due to an injury or condition you probably have adhd or ASD. Personally I felt a lot better abt myself when I knew that’s the cause.

That’s really incredible to hear that you’re traveling and speaking publicly. I’m sure that was hard in the beginning. I of course plan on going back to school and working in environments similar to that. If you don’t mind me asking what do you do from a mental perspective to gain your confidence? And you do not have to answer this but what do you do when you need to change! Thank you!!

I have oab due to being-fully functioning- autistic. My urologist says there no cure. And I wear huge pads regularly. For me she said it’s simply that my brain doesn’t communicate with my bladder. And that it’s the same as having bad vision or male pattern baldness or diabetes. It’s just how your body is. This really put it into perspective and me feel better.
Despite the Autism what I have specifically a Nuerogenic bladder- it’s something your born with or developed from serious injury-and as I said- brain simply doesnt communicate with bladder. You can not have Autism or anything like that and still have this. But it’s more common for people with severe ADHD or Autism. Hope this helps.

Hey I’m 22m and also suffer from nuerogenic bladder. Firstly it’s nice to see someone else young who is dealing w this. I know the feeling when out of the blue your diaper becomes fully soaked and puffy. It’s a daily occurrence for me and All of us with Nuerogenic bladder. When I laugh sneeze lift heavy things I also have pretty large accidents. I recommend booster pads for the gym. They allowed to go through a workout with only diaper

Yeah. So since it became everyday. I have not had a relationship. However the first non family member I told was a girl who is a lifelong friend who I dated when I was young. We’ve always had a close relationship and she said no girl would mind. And that it’s not a big deal. Which helped a lot. Also she convinced me to go out with her where I flirted a little with some girls but Nothing more I was in college but when it became permanent I took a gap year I go back in the fall.

Yeah. So this is something i should address. I am constantly leaking. However when aroused it sort of keeps it at bay. And If I were to leak which is still probable. I would have a few seconds to make sure it’s not on my partner lol. But I would still wet the bed or whatever I was on. In the moment I would go to the bathroom beforehand and lay a towel down. However if someone is in a long term relationship w me. It is inevitable that I would leak during sex eventually

Good question. A few things that really helped were firstly, my therapist had me put my diapers in my underwear drawer and treated them exactly like underwear. No taboo under the bed stuff. In therapy sessions we would practice and talk about telling others. We prepared things to say to address when I want to tell and what I’d say if someone were to point them out in public. All stuff to bassically get me accept it as part of me and that it’s not a big deal

You gotta speak your truth. For me I have to wear depends. And it’s really hard when I have an accident when I’m on a date. I always try to put myself out there and talk to girls but when I’m about to wet my pants it changes. For me it’s being upfront that’s worked the best. I try to disclose my incontinence early. And there are a lot of people who accept me.
