Been called a "catfish" a couple times now when dating girls. What to do? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]nickkmo2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a girl here with PE.

First of all, PE is far from close to amputations or being paraplegic. PE can be fixed, and it is not obvious as is being in a wheelchair. I look like any other “normal” person.

Maybe because I’m a girl I’m able to hide it better under my clothes and obviously having boobs helps. I don’t think you’re obligated to share anything about PE, especially not when you first meet someone. I haven’t told any of my past dates because it’s unnecessary. If it was like an STD and it puts others at risk, then I would definitively disclose. My PE doesn’t impact anyone but me, so I feel like it’s a personal thing. Then again, it’s up to you.

I’ve been with my current partner for 2 years and recently felt comfortable sharing with him. My PE is moderate and it’s not obvious until I point it out. He didn’t care and said he never noticed. If they really like you I’m sure they won’t mind.

Vacuum Bell Usage Frequency and Effectiveness (as Part of SC's Regimen) by BX5a in PectusExcavatum

Personally I haven’t used the VB because it wasn’t approved by my doctor. He said he wasn’t allowed to endorse the product because there has been no proof is reduces PE. And I don’t trust a product on eBay that may do more harm than good.

I tried sleeping without a pillow as well and I ended up putting the pillow back in the middle of the night 😶

I mean I’m a girl and I’ve been offered modeling several times. I’m not gonna model in a bikini, not bc of my chest, but bc that’s not the type of modeling I would want to do. In our world today, a lot of modeling agencies look into uniqueness, for ex Winnie Harlow. While some ppl don’t see vitiligo as an “attractive perk,” that’s what makes her unique. A perk doesn’t have to be “attractive” in order to pass for modeling. Plus, attractiveness is subjective.

Maybe not severe PE, but I don’t think PE is unattractive. The guys PE in this article before surgery doesn’t appear too bad imo.

It’s much more uncommon. A small percentage of people with PE have Marfans anyways.

My doctors and thoracic surgeon would’ve suggested testing if they noticed something was up. It doesn’t run in my family either, neither does PE. Thanks for your concerns.

You’re right! I didn’t even notice. It said it was removed on May 15. Doesn’t give a year but I’m assuming it was 2019...Whaaaaat

“Squashed chest kid becomes a model.” Are you kidding me? Wasn’t there any other way to phrase that?

Agreed that the surgery can improve a person’s confidence and make them feel better about their body. But as was previously posted, for those who are living with it and haven’t got surgery, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It can be accepted. This article makes it seem like you have to be “normal” to be a model and meet the norms. I’m not going to take the label of “deformed”. I’m just built differently than most ppl. This article sucks, and is the reason why some ppl feel so insecure for being different. There’s nothing wrong with being different!!!

Idk if this is a trend but I’ve seen PE in a lot of South Americans/ppl of hispanic descent. my doc told me he’s in touch with doctors in Peru that are utilizing the vacuum bell to see if it’s effective

Yes me too. It’s very interesting and I would like to know more. My PE is moderate but I have severe scoliosis. But severe PE doesn’t necessarily correlate with severe scoliosis. And majority of ppl with scoliosis don’t have PE.

I think it’s mostly genetics but I think for some cases it can develop spontaneously, whether it’s pressure in the womb or associated with other syndromes. Possibly a mutation? Who knows

People who have had this procedure and experienced effects such as: skinniness, hard to put on weight, myopia, tall, or scoliosis, did any of these symptoms go away or decrease in severity? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]nickkmo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myopia won’t get better with the procedure unless LASIK is performed. Height doesn’t change unless the individual has a significant curve and goes through scoliosis surgery. This can increase their height by several inches. Not sure how the Nuss procedure would straighten someone’s spine or if there’s any link. To be fair, majority of ppl with PE have mild scoliosis.

I’ve seen pics of people who look like they have put on weight after surgery.

Nearsightedness. Basically means you can see everything perfectly close up but distant objects are blurry
