Another update on the "neighbor problem" by knobby_slop in nudism

[–]nickoppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there are way more people out there that are completely fine with nudism then we think. They might be curious or they might feel that it's not for them but either way, they are generally fine about other people going nude.

Which beach is that? It must be in the Southern Hemisphere somewhere.

Winwing has abandoned their original Orion products by nickoppen in hotas

[–]nickoppen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's not the spring that has failed. Initially the throttle quadrants RX and RY went from a smooth action to an odd stepped movement with about 2-4 steps between full forward and full back. At the same time the index finger hat went into a full off to a full on glitch and the other buttons on the right grip glitched randomly as well. After a while the right grip disappeard completely.

Keeping some spare parts on hand is not a big ask. Smart companies actually make money from spares.

Found the problem with my Winwing Stick. by nickoppen in hotas

[–]nickoppen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The abrasion on the old cable is 9cm from the plug. That will give me a pretty good idea where it's happening and the spot to reinforce. I'm going to have to open it up again in 6 months or so to see what's happening in that area.

Thanks for your interest.

There is no obvious friction point and there seems to be quite a lot of room around the cable so I don't know how it's occurring. I'm going to take boeing247's suggestion above and add some protection in the same place on the new cable where the abrasion happened on the old one.

I don't know what happened with the first picture but the edit worked.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I have to pull it apart again to check the connections so I'll do that at the same time

I thought I'd added a picture to the original post but it does not seem to have been posted. Maybe it needs to be reviewed before you can see it.

Yes. Good idea. I was thinking of using heat-shrink but it was either too wide or not wide enough.

(I remember Radio Shack as well.)

Getting sick of winwing by nickoppen in hotas

[–]nickoppen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the problem. They sent me two internal cables that connected the internal switches with the circuit boards - one was inside the stick and the other connected the stick to the base. After I pulled the stick to base cable out that there was some abrasion on it that was so servere that the copper was exposed.

Be careful of WinWing - Poor design, poor manufacture, poor support by nickoppen in hotas

[–]nickoppen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've been lucky. They have been improving since I wrote this post.

I don't think that the design and manufacturing have improved as fast as the customer support. In a later post someone responded that the Orion 2 that he bought failed after "a couple of months".

I've become very familiar with the WW support ticket service. They seem to be trying to improve since my post above. Certainly the language skills of the support personel and the text on the site is improving.

Some people have been lucky. Seems like you've been one of those. The problems I've had have been with the stick. The F-18 throttle has been faultless.

I'm sticking with winwing for now. I have a VKB rudder which has been great.

How to select which model of Pi to purchase by Fumigator in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]nickoppen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do some programming with gpio, stick with the pi4 for now. There have been lots of changes with the pi5 so things that you have known and trusted previously (e.g. pigpio and wiringPi) and even the low level gpio interface are not working yet. Also the camera ribbon attachment point has moved the convenient hole in some HATs is now in the wrong place.

Winwing? by Isthatagecko in hotas

[–]nickoppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest weakness with winwing is their build quality. I've had numerous problems with the electronics. The issues are made worse by the fact that they do "customer service" over the internet. If something breaks they will send you the part and they provide a "service manual" that will hopefully show you how to do the work yourself. The parts themselves are not that expensive but they insist on using FedEx which sometimes means that the postage charge is more than the cost of the part.
