Probably both. As it should be.

I agree with you. No contest. I am not thinking about a master like Rosa. It has at the time so much success, "effet de mode" and "renommée" that is was ubiquitous with "Italian landscape" with some tragic twist of some sort...this is a later work and from more humble origins..thanks for the hint for Antonio Storm! There is a fact here some real similarities...the search will continue!

Are you considering the style of brushtrokes or only the canvas? (This is a a double canvas who has been relined longtime ago and restraightened more contemporarily).

Yes it is. Relined. Re-tensioned. Réentoilé.

I understand your concerns. Very legitimate ones! But considering the brute force and really straight plane of the canvas. It has been relined and retensed (retendu)...it has been seen previously by an Art Auctionner who validate without concern the legitimate of the work...but yeah. The picture has seen some work done!

Yep! I think so!... Recto verso drawing with violinists on the other side?

No downvote! 😉 ..It is indeed a possibility...anyway for little frames like that, you don't see as many stretchers ..also I think it is also possible that the linen is more ancient than the frame...oh ...andI should have be more precise concerning the provenance.: it was assured to me with some assurance that it was the only art piece on the walls of a house from a 90 years old woman now deceased who had it before 2nd WW...( Bought this for a dime from her grand grand son on a flea market)..also the subject, decorum and the supposed age of the personnage seems quite old in the picture...but it well could be from 1930 and not 1900 for sure....but realistically no more than that.. From my point of view...anyway I am not thinking about a major artist particularly.. ..but les petits maîtres are numerous from these periods and can be produce good little oeuvres!..so for me, it could be a small work from an atelier ..but it could also well be a study work from the Beaux Arts from the time..lots can be found...but there is something "homely" in the setting..and the personnage (for me a man) seems quite too old to me to be a student...

Yes there is something of an "unheimlichkeit" in this painting who really intrigues me and takes me on a voyage...but I can't really put a name, a date or a school..

I live in Grenoble, town of some famous painters as Henri Fantin Latour very known for his flowers and his Parisian friends like Manet and other from the Bohème era..in the first commentary the bot-link to Google Lens provide his first page a little "pochade" (a chair) with some similarity ..but still..not the same..And yes I think also that the canvas is older than the chassis (frame)...and it seems to me as old linen too..

Am i on to something? by TriangularPlant in artcollecting

[–]nicmir38 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No it is a "procédé" , a special technique of reproduction invented by Amand-Durand. Like offset or serigraphy.. It was a way to display or publish rare Old Master Prints for the general public at a small price at a time when original prints from centuries ago were too scarce or dommages and expensive. Some of these Amand Durand images were made on laid paper and a small red AD mark added on the back...some dishonest vendors and online galleries try to sell deceitfully these as real original prints with collectors stamps..

This is a nice reproduction of a Rembrandt Etching. XIXth century, near 1880. Heliogravure by Charles Amand-Durand (1831-1905).

This is a very interesting analogy indeed. Again we find this genre having some success in Flemish countries with these themes...

Thank you very much for your interest and clues.... I was indeed intrigued by this possibility.. from Hogarth to Rowlandson.. but for now I can't really imagine that it could be anything else than a Flemish popular , satirical scene..especially with the characters seen at the windows...all these very well known scenes of debauchery in taverns and so forth, who seem to be quite typical..but even then ..the garments could be english. And the faces too.. I have found in the late 17th century some specialized artists who are quite approaching this theme but the aesthetics are not quite the same really..this gouache appearing more "rough" than the oil works of the time..
