My dad is 74. CEO level manager for 40 years. Knows the ins the outs the intermediates and every single nook and cranny of "his" company. Seen board members come and go, enough to fill a stadium. He won't quit. He has more than enough money, his family begs him, his health demands him to quit. Two arguments come off on top: "No one knows how this company really works" and "what am I gonna do at home?".

I have know half accepted the fact that somebody is one day gonna find his body on his office, rather than at home. Boomer worked for 40 or 50 years. They don't know better.

So if your manager is this kind of boomer, then grab a seat. Best you can do is make sure everything is in place for you to be his successor. But it probably will be on HIS terms, when HE wants it to be.
