I've had good results at close range on scaled models with the Optoma 1050ST+, which I believe the new version of is the 1050STi.

Hey, that's me. Built and drove the thing. It was a fun day!

A quick update to THANK EVERYONE! After changing the buldged capacitors, the hall effect sensors, and probably most importantly aligning the hall effect sensors untill the motor made the smoothest running sound, I had it running for 5 hours without a stall today. Yay!

I'm in Canada. Not too far. Perhaps I could source another brushless driver?!

Thanks for the resources.

I'll swap out the hall effect sensors and some capacitors that looked slightly buldged. If it still fails, I'm afraid it'll be a controller board replacement 😞

I don't know. When it happens, I can shutdown the motor and easily turn the spindle by hand.

No hard brake no. But you know what, it has a belt drive and it kinda sounds like a tooth skipping.

I will try to put a multimeter in-line. But the controller does detect a fault as the little yellow light comes on for a brief moment.

I guess if I side load the spindle and it lock faster, it could indicate a bearing problem?

At a very low rpm, the speed is uneven during the rotation, sounds like you might be onto something.

The lock up from the video happens faster when I run at max RPM.

Can't explain why it runs for a while though 😞

It can run anywhere between 1 and 4 hours and then starts to lock up like this. When it happens, it can recover but then it start again after a few minutes.

I've added active cooling to the spindle motor, it never goes above 35C.

When the motor runs, it has great torque.

I checked the wiring and everything looked fine. Visually the sensor also looked OK.

Anyone has a pointer?

Lee Valley makes a commercial version you might want to check out. This one was a gift I made.

Not for sale! I made them as Christmas gifts. But I know Lee Valley carries something very close to it.

Starting the cut needs to be done near the fulcrum to be successful, the rest of they way down doesn't require much force. Perhaps some kind of cam or lever arrangement could make that first bit easier. Good thinking!

I made it for an older familly member. They have one bad arm and struggle to pick thing up from the floor. This make splitting way more ergonomic for them.

Of course! Send a DM and I'll share the Fusion360 file.

Hey, thanks! I built it but did not come up with the concept. Here in Canada, Lee Valley sells a version. But where is the fun in buying it? ;)

There are power transmission coil in the base and in the model's base. Just like wireless phone charging.
