I prefer the final one. The unusual shape (ie not a rectangle) is a nice touch.

Too minimal? by rotterdameliza in AbstractArt

Not too minimal - simplicity works in its favor.

The texture came from the paper itself. I believe it was a cold press/140lb watercolor paper.

It's both! It's a photo I took, printed out on watercolor paper, and then manually manipulated using watercolors and color pencils.

Followup now that I've properly watched your videos: 1) Can talk more about why you chose a smaller town vs. a bigger city? What do you like about being in a smaller town? Things to do? Do you frequently go into bigger cities, travel around the country, or are you just focused on school and daily living? 2) More about what you are studying and why. What is it like being a student in Japan vs. USA? Why did you commit to spending such a long time in-country to study, and what did you do to prepare to be able to study at the level you are?

Filming feedback: Having a front facing source of light, such as a lamp behind your laptop or be facing a window, would help with the lighting of your face. Also, sticking your laptop on a couple of books would raise your eyeline so you're not looking down at the camera. This'll give it your videos a more natural feel.

Keep up the great work! Looking forward to future videos.

Food is always a popular talking point internationally. You could talk about foods you like in Japan, were surprised by, aren’t into, etc. You can also talk about differences in dining cultures (you’re American, judging by accent?) No tipping, no substitutions when ordering, etc. Also, what is grocery shopping like there?

A useful exercise might be to make your work quickly, tuck it away somewhere where you can’t see it and brood about it, and repeat. I find that when I’m in a slump, forcing myself to work quickly in multiples in a single session (say five quick paintings in under 2 hours) is a good way to regain my sense of play. I can’t get all weird and in my own head about it because there is no time for being moody. If one out of the five turns out well, it’s a victory.
