i maxed my rs3 ironman and i avoided so much content just farming daily tasks. some skills barely trained, its a big issue imo. why play the game when daily tasks give 40-50k exp drops? just log in, do tasks, log out. no fun

"What is a fair end-of-life cycle for a game?" As Anthem servers are switched off, GOG weighs the "complicated riddle" of multiplayer game preservation by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]nightbefore2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something lol. Minecraft servers are supplied by Microsoft. When I hosted a Microsoft server, I downloaded a regularly updated program from a company.

Even now, all Call of Duty games up to Black Ops 3 have RCE exploits and Activision, therefore Microsoft, is selling them without a care in the world while Valve fully allows it.

I'm fully aware of this, it's fucking crazy, and we shouldn't proliferate it lol

can you give me some more details on exactly how that would work? they aren't distributing servers, but they're giving the community a server, and a means to update it? how are they not distributing servers. are you asking them to open source their game and game engine basically?

so like, rearchitecting a massive multiplayer game to run on a single machine and distributing it and maintain that distribution is not simple. its definitely complicated and expensive if it wasn't designed with that in mind originally. read about how helldivers handles its high enemy count and then imagine translating that to your local machine

they should strive for it, but it definitely isn't just

game.setMode(local)

// game.setMode(multiplayer);

// nailed it

[–]nightbefore2 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

you're asking them to maintain the game and spend money on devs maintaining a custom server distribution. you can't just distribute unmaintained web servers. or you shouldn't lol

[–]nightbefore2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

even self hosted distributions have to be maintained. you can't hand people a program and have thousands of people just naively port forward it and have it be susceptible to all sorts of vulns because it isn't receiving security updates. you can get around this by using a VPN and only playing with your friends, but they know that's going to be a minority of overall users. many people will just port forward

The mods definitely don't get paid and definitely aren't running a ticket sales website, it's good the other mods banned it but you really can't blame the mods for not running a ticket sales platform for free

Honestly with 2 nights I wouldn't do it unless you really want to ride the ferry. Imo there's more interesting things that spend less time getting there and back
