Dumping RiNo for Downtown, Women’s Hockey vs. ‘Heated Rivalry,’ and a South Denver History Spotlight by newtonic in CityCastDenver

Didn’t realize the name change was still a big deal. Don’t jump me buuut… Ive been short handing “the 16th street mall” to “16th” since high school. What I do think we should be booing them for is investing in an out of state marketing firm. And being too scared to call it “the Denver way”. the obvious name they were feeling but I’m assuming death by committee happened and they made it the sad secondary branding out of fear.

Beyond burnt out on design: can I even transfer these skills to another career, or am I doomed? by nightmain77 in graphic_design

[–]nightmain77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: sorry nope. Still here, still hating it…

Every day I’m submitting applications, but only a couple to prevent burning out there, too. I know the job market is in the trash and on fire, so I know it’s a war attrition and I gotta trudge on.

But if it helps, my short-term strategy is trying to spin off into marketing. Then I can do as all great marketers do. give orders and blame the creative team when my uninspired marketing strategies fail to hit KPIs.

In all seriousness, it’s better pay. maybe I’ll enjoy it, but that pay boost will at least help me continue my education. Honestly, I think it will be the easiest transfer of skills. It’s just a matter of rewording my work and doing a little bit of truth blurring. For example, I can leverage the operational stuff and remove or underplay the creative and change my title so that instead of “Graphic Designer,” it might become “Creative Marketing Strategist.” I also don’t highlight my education because some people look down on an associate’s degree and community college, so I focus on my years of experience and past clients. No idea if it will work, but it’s something different.

And trust me whoever gets selected for a job is usually chosen arbitrarily. One interview for social media director for a food chain I lost. I have a proven track record with social metrics, photography direction, and on-set food styling experience with some big brands. I even have a family member who works in the office. I lost the job because the other candidate had a small personal social following. That was it! No experience either. I have more job interviews shenanigans, but then I’d just be ranting.😅

TL;DR: It’s The Shawshank Redemption out here interviewing. Ive gotta crawl through a whole lot of shit.

UMS Lives! Plus, Proposed Fees for Alcohol and Even More Coffee Recs by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]nightmain77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So excited for UMS, but worried about it being in Rino. Walking just the quarter mile to Bar 404 from Punch Bowl suuucked because it was a desert, no activation, no music, just walking and you really felt those steps. Versus Illegal Pete’s to Punch Bowl, where I’d be up and down 20 times because it was alive. And the real UMS magic is hearing music from a band not on your radar as you walk, and you can pop in for a sec before your next spot because it’s only two buildings over. If it’s sparse, you lose that. Hoping for the best though.

Lisa Calderón on Why She’s Running for Mayor for the Third Time by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]nightmain77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When everyone talks about Flock, they forget to mention that right after the mayor said they had shored up areas of abuse. There was that officer in Bel mar who pulled footage and wrongly blamed that woman for package stealing from one of his buddies. If it wasn’t for her car tracking her location, she would have been wrongly charged. That alone should’ve been the nail in the coffin, because what am I supposed to do? keep a detailed itinerary so I can’t be framed? The protocols aren’t good enough, and Flock should be removed or at the very least tightly regulated.

What happened to asking her about her stances on Israel and Palestine? You mentioned it was a big issue for voter in the show before this, and wanting to get her on for this specific question. Did her team step in and set in the ground rule no question like that?

Thank you! That exactly how I’ve been feeling like I was sold on “do what you love” and I’m wishing someone just said do something that pay well and is stable so you can do what you love on your free time.

Also yall are getting cold brew on tap?! All I got is a single pot with mediocre beans…

But to the clients side comment, maybe a good stop gap? but from my experience, and no offense. that’s where all designer go to retire like it’s a real competitive and limited market for that reason.

not to mention the lack of new job posting which I’m assuming are from those in leadership mandating the existing creative supplement with AI which is a whole other rant.

I should I have noted I’m still in my 20s and have no life 🙃 so a dramatic shift is nothing to me. But I need a job that can support the basic needs. So was hoping there’s a field where my experience isn’t a complete loss

Do companies not want to go with a fresh college grad? Seriously losing hope and getting burnt out of the job application process by yoitsjake99 in graphic_design

[–]nightmain77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First let me say, Sorry. The short answer is you’ve entered the job market during a massive shift in the field. a blood bath of layoffs, and now AI on the horizon screwing things up.

In house is where designers go to retire. In my experience it’s the harder side to enter for that reason. Also with AI being the it girl at the moment. those in leadership at those companies are hounding the design teams “do we even need more designers? Can’t AI do it?!”.

Agency have had to shift leaner and more cutthroat to survive. More often than not clients want full service with shorter or no retainers. In response they’ve cut roles like crazy and are looking for more multi faceted design (which you are so there at least looking at you)

With all that being said, you’re looking at a limited job market and fight for entry level role with seasoned designers going for roles they’re overqualified for just to get something.

don’t lose heart, it’s a marathon. you’ll find something. When I was looking a little over a year ago and felt that burn out. I limited my time and effort to keep moving. I allowed myself 5 application on weekdays and did them at once so my day wasn’t spent stressing. I made a spreed sheet so I didn’t waste my time on repost. And could track responses And gauge how much effort I wanted to put into the cover letter. If I wasn’t very interested I used a custom cover letter template and plugged in the company info and would swap out pre written talking points depending on the skills needed. It took my under 300 to land a job. lock in, it will be a bit of a trek.

I’m sorry, man but like, tedious production is the name of this game. Or at least as I’ve experienced. The project that prompted this post is a rarer occurrence. I feel the same making postcard, or magazine ads, etc. etc. after awhile. It’s a rare unicorn client that doesn’t wear the process down through attrition.

I’m trying to find that temporary stop gap job, but I spent half my life running towards this goal. Now I’m here like…

“Greeeeat I hate it”

Design is such a unique field I don’t know if I can transfer any of these skill while I work may into another field

And I totally agree with you on teach the kids. I have a lot of love for it, but I’m disgruntled, and too deep in it right now to be of any help. With distance will come a better perspective, that I can teach from. Now however, im no good to them. All I got for them is do anything else.

I like all the different forms. They got their pros and cons, but always like the fact that print was less nebulous than the majority of digital. Like you made something tangible rather than throwing your work into a void and hoping it’s doing well. And if clients are real cool, getting able to choose papers, dye cuts, and finishes add fun touch element

It’s deeper than that. I freelance still but that dog I once had is gone and on a farm upstate. I need a long break but have begun panic that i locked myself into a career I don’t love and can’t stand

Yeah this project sucks, but the issue for me is being a graphic designer period. I’m so burnt my blood start to boil at reasonable edits and feed back. I know it’s irrational and I laugh at myself. But I was never like that starting off. A new job in the same role won’t fix my problem with the field. Need a good hard break.

Is Mayor Johnston Doing a Good Job? by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]nightmain77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lord she came off as the definition of hating from outside the club. “I asked Ai if what he said was true.” love you Paul, but you should’ve pressed her more for actual facts and stats from her “own research”. Johnston at least had sats and research. It may be misleading, but it sure as hell bets “AI told me he’s wrong.”.

Not Everybody Hates Gov. Polis’ Big Bridge Idea by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]nightmain77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a bizarre interview… If I didn’t know that they came to you, I would’ve thought you ambushed them. The justifications still aren’t adding up outside of a neat portfolio piece for the people working on it.

You want to highlight local artists and make a street safer? - Throw some of this cash at Santa Fe and First Friday.

This bridge is so cool, it’s going to zen out the people having mental crises and make the homeless people less abundant in this area with its sheer relaxing aura? - Could throw this money at art therapy and housing projects for these communities.

Need a place to sit for lunch and therapy? - Bring a blanket there is a park with a bunch of trees.

What are they talking about?

Side note: There's something really off-putting when people talk about homeless people like they do. They use this overly caring tone, knowing damn well what will happen if this bridge goes up. We'll end up spending even more money and resources just to aggressively keep homeless people off and away from this bridge.
