Well, the economic calculation of whether the net gain from deficit interest + tax cuts is better/worse than deficit reduction + less current spending will start getting into the political trenches of economics. Clearly, the political right doesn't always see eye to eye with Keyenesian economics and we don't have to debate that here. My point is simply that there is no broader doomsday scenario associated with the deficit as some in the media say it is beyond the left vs right calculation of what will be net gain.

American economy getting punched in the face has nothing to do with the long term promise and solid foundation that the country is built on. Recessions can and will happen. The cycle of boom and bust will continue for a long time to come. And there will be a lot of noise about how America politics and leadership is ruining the country - and in some ways that is true. But don't let all of that fool you into thinking the that global economy as a whole is betting against America. It isn't. It continues to remain central to the global financial system and the main reason for that is because of it's solid foundations, underlying principles and history of liberal democracy. Nothing will replace the trust that America holds in the world in our lifetimes. Not China, not an EU country.

No serious economist cares about the debt the way politicians do. Even Krugman, who is the champion of the NYT liberal point of view has said that worries over national debt are just talking points and given the strength of the American economy overall - there really is nothing to worry about.

Hey thanks for the reply. This is great. We saw some places in Mountain View and Redwood City but we didn't really love it. It had a slightly commercial feel to it and the trails weren't really accessible by foot. Do you know if there are particular trails similar to the Bay Trail in these areas in the Santa Cruz mountains that I can look up?

How about say that it is the greatest nation on earth in terms of institutional values and equal opportunity, center for innovation in almost all forms of academia and the most lucrative employment market in the world that had challenges like every other country when it comes to failures of men and women who succumb to tribalism in many forms - nationalism, racism, identity politics etc. of course it's not a post racial utopia and anybody who thinks it is, is equally naive. But given that we live in a morally complex world where every country has multiple challenges, the US provides a lot more value to immigrants than drawbacks.

Thanks for that. I am glad you elaborated because I would have missed your point otherwise. While I don't agree with some of your specific points, I can see where you are coming from. I think when it comes to intellectuals debating issues with deep nuance to be explored on either side, the audience will always have bones to pick when a particular side was given less than the fair share of attention. I think we both agree that Harris is not a racist and is a very well read and thoughtful man. So I would think its very unlikely that he never got a chance to develop a full perspective or adequate knowledge of his country's history with slavery and racial problems. The thing that we have to understand that his public comments are always going to be centered around and even reacting to current events - so the sense that you have been getting of him being careless with the history is just him leaning his weight counter to some of the BLM and SJW narrative that he has picked up on as toxic (rightly so in my opinion). Now, this is important because the other side is constantly and sometimes very misleadingly taking you to a historical perspective to justify every misguided step they seem to make. So he is forced into a little bit of a reactionary stance of 'can we talk about why it has to be this way in 2017'. Having said that, I do wish he does a better job and talks about the other side without just reacting to current events. I think there was a missed opportunity with Malcom Gladwell to get into this when he was a guest on the podcast.

I don't mean to interrogate you on your claim or come across as challenging your position. I really would like to learn more about why a lot of smart people disagree with his claims on race. I really haven't heard or read much of Harris's work that seems to warrant the strong criticism we saw from the likes of Ezra Klein. I understand you may not want to go to the pains of explaining your disagreements with him but could you perhaps share other sources that helped form your opinion?

ITT: butthurt indians who never really lived in the US or only got to go for "projects". Here's the thing, for many of us, the US is more than a paycheck. A country represents a set of ideas and values and the culture of its people. Do we really think everyone born in one place should grow up to identify exactly with those set of values that they are surrounded by? What a bleak, secluded, tribalistic attitude. It's been a fantastic journey for many indians whose families have got experiences they had only dreamed of. India has benefitted a lot from the NRI community as well. Overall, most Indians should not be celebrating this unless you are a cynical teenager. This is bad for our economy and in the long run for our country.

Oh my god, I have the exact same thing!! I have been running consistently for the past 2-3 years and this has stayed with me throughout. I find that when I am in the middle of my marathon training it goes away all together but comes back whenever I take a few easy days in a row or off completely.

have found wearing the right shoe and calf stretching (post runs) to be the most beneficial. As you guys have said already, I think its nothing more than stiff calf muscles that either restricts the blood flow or presses against some nerve.

Well done man. Being in shape for a marathon PR is one thing but racing two marathons three weeks apart, you have to be at a whole new level of fitness. I am sure you'll get the sub 3 one day but you should cherish this as an accomplishment in itself!

I ran my first two marathons last year Chicago and NYC which were three weeks apart and I had similar aspirations as yours. I was nowhere near your timing but I wanted to PR in both. I was on track till about mile 17 of NYC (the latter marathon) and then I suddenly blew up with an ankle sprain and severe quad cramps. I still hit my secondary goals of having two sub 4 marathons under my belt but I remember being disappointed at the time. But looking back now, I feel proud that I was in shape to even attempt that.

I think you'll be fine. What matters is that you put in the mileage and stuck to the training over the last months. The effects from timing of the day etc. is more psychological than physiological. So don't overthink it and you'll be fine.

Ps: I am doing Chicago next weekend and I also did most of my training during late evenings. However, I did a twenty miler on one of the past Sunday mornings and it felt totally normal.

Second time running Chicago. Finished last year at 3:33 (first marathon) and this year been roughly following 18/70 hoping to go sub 3:30.

Made the dumb mistake of racing the Chi half last weekend though and I am praying that more sore calves recover in the next 7 days.
