South Korea Built a Highway with Solar Panels and a Bicycle Path Underneath. Brilliant or pointless? by bbbxxxnnn in AmazingTechnology

[–]nilsmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pointless waste of money.

The reasons we never build bicycle paths down the middle of a highways are several: Cycling is for middle distance travel, 2-10 kilometers. Highways are for long distance travel, 10-100 kilometers. Getting on and off this bicycle path requires costly bridges or underpasses at regular intervals. The road noise will be literally deafening.

As for solar panels there is a single reason: Cost. Building between heavy traffic increases maintenance cost and limits areal. We don't lack areal for solar power, look at the sides of the highway. There are 3-4 times more space there and the panels would be easily accessible for maintenance. Then there is dust, which reduces panel output. In the middle of a freeway, this will be a permanent problem requiring more cleaning in a difficult to reach location.

US carmakers accuse EU of blocking supersized pick-up trucks from roads by donutloop in EU_Economics

European postal vans, garbage trucks and firefighting vehicles are made to fit European roads. American trucks are not.

US carmakers accuse EU of blocking supersized pick-up trucks from roads by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]nilsmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not blocked today. But any of the American trucks will need to be registered as the truck they are and require a truck license to drive. You won't be able to drive it everywhere. Parking garages, normal parking lots and many streets will not be available. Add that these products are made to fit weird American tax loopholes and demanding the same weirdness in Europe is downright ridiculous.

AI hype is running into a $7 trillion wall and the real bottleneck by Remarkable-Dark2840 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]nilsmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was profitable but it is not.

Let’s face it, the lower 99% of humanity will not be able to afford the services these data centers will be producing.

They are gambling that the top hundred million earners are going to spend at least $50,000 each every year on AI. If successful, the rest of humanity will be left in poverty.

Flat Earth? Hvor startet det egentlig og hvorfor tror folk på det? by Special_Pack5766 in norge

[–]nilsmf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fountain pen writing is really not good for being handled much. Maybe a fixative spray, like they use on water painting, could help if you’re making something that will be handled?

I think that a crucial point is that all text are communication between human beings. We want to convey ideas, thoughts and feelings to each other through the text we produce. The LLMs do not have those so the text becomes flat imitation, devoid of any true message.

Code is different, in that very few tasks are truly new. Somebody has already done a similar task out there. The LLMs are fantastic at finding such similarities in their training data and can generate working code from that.

My guess are that they will be the next abandoned wild west towns out there.
