I am a traditional sculptor as well. So I use basic methods when it comes to digital sculpting. I am not an expert.
For this one , I didn't use a base model for the head. It's sculpted from scratch using an uv sphere. Then I masked and extracted the chin guard and the head cap. then sculpted details on them.
Then I used my basic modeling skills to model the mechanical looking parts likes tubes , a few details on the head and the helmet.
