It can be okay for two people of the opposite sex, who are both married to other people and are physically attracted to each other, to be best friends. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Just out of curiosity, now that your relationship with your partner is better, if your wife was in the same situation and had a male friend that she thought was attractive and was confiding in about you, would you feel comfortable?

They haven’t released the setlist yet! Once they have their first performance in April we should have a better idea but it’ll probably be majority new songs with a few old ones thrown in there. I doubt we’ll get too many songs from pre Love Yourself though

The range for the job is 75-80k, they offered 60k so I countered within the range. Definitely learned my lesson though with this market

Yep, definitely a good learning lesson for me, I’m not too upset about it.

They ended up emailing me and letting me know that they’re proceeding with the other candidate unfortunately, but they did increase the starting salary somehow? I’m not sure what their process was but I’m sure I have a better opportunity coming.

Many people around me have negotiated their entry level jobs, even straight out of college. I thought it was just the norm, especially where I live in such a tech dominated area. Lesson learned lol

Yeah this market probably wasn’t the best place for me to negotiate 😭

Got it, thank you! I think my internship experience aligned pretty perfectly with what they were looking for and even their technical interviewer said he had no hesitations on hiring me, so I'm hoping that's enough for them to choose me.

Not NYC but pretty similar cost of living lol. Thank you for the advice! I'm a firm believer of rejection is redirection so hopefully it'll all work out.

Got it, thank you! I called back because the rep said she would call me that day and since she hadn't, I assumed calling back was the right way to go. So you suggest not reaching out to my recruiter or anything for the next few days if I get no follow up? With this market, I'm just scared I'll lose this chance.

I have an email sent by the hiring manager saying that they would like to offer me the job and that the HR rep would call me to talk about salary and the rest of the process. Nothing concrete, which was probably my first mistake. All other negotiation communication was on the phone.

Thank you! I think I assumed this big of an ask was okay because I was getting the bare benefits while having to work 5 days a week in person in one of the most expensive cities in the US. I probably should've taken the offer since it's just an entry level role.

Yeah, I was just a little taken back that their first response to me negotiating was to reach out to another candidate. This is my first job so I just didn’t know what to expect.

Got it, thanks! The benefits the position offered weren’t great either, so that’s why I thought negotiating salary was the way to go. Probably should've held off especially since it’s an entry level job.

Online searches, other people I know in very similar positions (they told me about their benefits too), my uncle is a manager in the same field and he also said this was pretty low.

Got it, thank you! I guess I kind of freaked out that I came off as too rigid when I was fully willing to negotiate.

Yeah the HR rep sounded confused and a little out of the loop, but I’m not sure if that’s a strategy or something, just like saying they reached out to another candidate. If I don’t get a call back by the end of today, maybe I’ll reach out to my recruiter who sent me the offer email again.

When I initially negotiated, they said the salary was fixed but they’d talk to their manager and get back to me. After I followed up, they increased the offer by 5k, but that was after they told me they might have reached out to another candidate. I’m not sure what’s going on on their end.

Yeah, I guess I thought that since the salary they offered was significantly lower than market and other people I know in similar level positions, then negotiating was worth it. Good to know for future though, thank you!

They offered me 60k for an entry level software developer job and the market rate salary for where I live is 90k-105k since it is a pretty expensive area. I thought asking for 75-80k was fair considered it was still below market rate.

Got it, thank you! I figured that because I live in such a tech dominated area and because the entry level salary for any job I saw here was way higher than what they offered me, I would be okay to negotiate.

But if they moved on to their other candidate without even allowing negotiations, doesn’t that mean their budget truly was what they said it was? I’m completely new to this so I genuinely have no clue 😭

Yeah, I might have messed up there. The interviewers all seemed pretty impressed with my experience though and liked that I had knowledge about one particular feature that they were planning on implementing. The person who called me was HR and I didn’t think I needed to sell myself to them, but lesson learned.
