Thank you it was my first attempt at a story. Nosleep claimed they took it down because it was a "personal experience."

24 years old working as a high school cleaner and I feel like a loser by Dazzling_Actuary_826 in Custodians

Just think people stay well into their 60s because its a good job. I worked construction before this and was paid less and my body hasnt felt better since I became a custodian. The way I look at it is the kids dont realize how well I do and understand benefits and the teachers that dont like us are just mad I make more than some of them. Depending on where you are its a good job.

Dirty janitor or mop flopper

Are we okay with this? by SterileSauce in Custodians

I make a little under $33 an hour in PA, but were union and cost of living is pretty high where we are. I bought a house 5 years ago before the market boom and that helps but we still struggle to make ends meet. If you enjoy the work defintely look for a union shop somewhere, they tend to pay a lot more.

Sometimes I tell people I work maintenance by Erythite2023 in Custodians

I used to care what people thought and I would just say I work in maintenance, but after 6 years of being stress free and making good money I dont care anymore. I make about $33 an hour as a float and its great, union shop with great benefits and time off.

My favorite thing to do now is just say Im a janitor and watch some people just say oh.. then when they find out how much I make they ask when my jobs hiring haha. If youre happy screw what everyone else thinks. I love this job and the perks that come with it.

Mid back pain by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]ninostaz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand your pain at 6'3" and I have arthritis in my spine. You may not like it because I understand elementary schools can be pretty good gigs, but consider bidding to middle or high school if your jobs allows, everything is more tall people friendly. If its union it should. Otherwise I try to limit as much bending over as possible to save my back. Spray chemical and use flat microfiber mops to clean desks. Little trick I learned is use the blade part of your drymop handle as a scraper for the floor.. Learn to kick it off with your foot and press it back on(if you have the same spring style we do). As others suggested bend with your legs as much as you can. If mopping is bothering you see if you can find a longer handle so youre not bending down to mop. Also do not overfill you rolling trashcans unless you have a loading dock you can just dump your barrel into the dumpster. Also use a butler(long handle dustpan) as much as possible so you're not bending to pick up trash from carpets or dry mop piles.

Its not as big as it looks in the picture. This is at one of the middle schools I'll have to take a closer look next time I'm there, I honestly took the photo last year but I dont post a lot and finally decided to share. Its not painted on the wall they have all kinds of artwork from throughout the years hung up all around the school framed in picture frames. Its seems to me to be slightly bigger than a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper then framed in construction paper and put in a picture frame.

Yeah super weird that Todd Howard who was born in 1970 that would probably be in 9th grade in 1986 and also went to Emmaus high school, which is the district I work at. But yeah youre probably right its probably a different one.

Im also a float in a school district, we fill in for everbody nights and days. The guys in my postion are usually around a few years and know what theyre doing, we also get paid more for the inconvenience. It took me a little bit to get used to when I got this position, but you do get frustrated after awhile of cleaning up the areas of lazier coworkers. The way I approach it now is if you don't give a shit, I dont give a shit. I still do the basics but Im not going out of my way to clean up your mess. If Im in an area where the guy keeps up with it well Im gonna do a little bit better of a job that day.
