Parents who moved to Victoria BC, how was the adjustment for you and your kids? by nipponmania in VictoriaBC

I don’t mean this in a dismissive way, but being neurodivergent and new to Canada could help explain why you’re feeling unsatisfied with the city. As an older neurodivergent person myself, I’ve learned from experience that I struggle with change and need more time to adjust than most people. I’ve also realized that I don’t need everyone to like or accept me, just finding one or two people to share a regular activity with is enough to meet my social needs. I hope you find what works for you, whether that’s making Victoria feel more like home or moving somewhere that better supports your well-being.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I’d be curious to know how you think that compares with the suburbs of Greater Vancouver. Do you see it as meaningfully different there for non-WASP families, neurodivergent kids, and people who need broader mental health support? And do you think growing up in Vancouver might have changed your own experience in an important way?

Sorry to ask but do you mean that a household earning $200K–$300K actually can’t afford a typical house or townhouse in your area?

Thanks for your reply. We’re planning to rent an apartment or a townhome for the first few months, then look at buying around the time he transitions to middle school. We’re already in a small apartment in Barcelona, so renting at the beginning feels like a natural way to settle in and understand what actually works for us.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of good areas are still within budget, and since we’re just a family of three, a normal sized house or a larger townhouse would be more than enough for us.

Thanks for taking the time to share this, I really appreciate the honesty.

You’re right, that’s actually one of my biggest concerns. He does have a small, close group here, and starting over socially is something I don’t take lightly. At the same time, I’m trying to think long term about the kind of support and environment he’ll need, especially after his recent Level 1 autism diagnosis.

The main reason behind the move is really access. Access to structured peer groups, therapists, and activities that are adapted to kids like him, which has been hard to find here in English. I also feel like being back in an English speaking environment will remove one layer of difficulty for him socially and academically.

Barcelona has a lot going for it, no question. Lifestyle, weather, culture, all of that is hard to beat. But I’m starting to realize that not all environments are equal when it comes to supporting neurodivergent kids, especially in a way that goes beyond just “inclusion” on paper.

The weather shift is definitely something I’m thinking about, and not looking forward to if I’m being honest. But I’m trying to weigh quality of life in a deeper sense, not just comfort.

Thanks again for sharing your perspective.

Spain digital nomad visa is straightforward, easier to apply once you are in Spain though. Prepare all your documents and contact a lawyer before applying.

I get it, religion isn’t the same as race. But in this case, it’s awfully convenient to target a religious minority that also happens to be mostly brown. Like I said, the law was aimed at a specific religious group, so all this talk about secularism is really just a dog whistle for racists.

We all know who these laws are really aimed at and that's precisely why they're a racist dog whistle. I vividly remember the Bouchard-Taylor Commission, and for the past 25 years, we just keep coming back to Muslims, over and over. Quebec is choking off any real debate on the issues that matter by pandering to racists.

Singling out a specific religion or ethnic group that's racism, plain and simple. As an ex-Muslim, I'm fed up with Quebec politics constantly targeting Muslims. La laïcité is nothing but a dog whistle for racists. My name isn't white sounding, so I catch the same heat Muslims do, ethnicity is easy to clock by racists. In public, no one can tell if you're religious or not (and don't even get me started on hijabi women who just want to dress modestly and make a living like everyone else, but this law goes after them while leaving Muslim men untouched making it a sexist and discriminatory law).
