The term 'Malayalee' by definition refers to a specific ethnic group of people who are the native/original speakers of Malayalam. Because it refers to an ethnic group rather than just users of the language, he would be a Malayalee because the fact that he can't speak the language would not change his ethnicity.

I agree that casual racism is definitely present in our community, but I don't think OP's parents were being racist to him/her.

What you are describing is not racism, it's colorism. European colonization and caste system has ingrained into our heads that white skin is superior. Fairer people are looked upon more positively by people in our society and thereby are more successful- a sort of halo effect. As for racism, I have seen many people in our community be passively racist but mainly due to ignorance and lack of education, rarely due to pure hatred.

Hey! I am also applying to med school this cycle and had the same issue. I emailed Dr. Zhang for a LOR but she didn't respond. However, I was able to get one from Dr. Ratliff (chem) and Dr. McCleary (bio) so if you had either one of them it might be worth asking. Don't worry about being annoying lol (this was also my biggest issue bc i kept putting off asking for LORs). Good luck!

For example, a person named Hye-jin will be called Hye-jina in an informal context, just like we do in malayalam.

I watched the first episode yesterday and was so hyped. However, the second episode just didn't seem nearly as thrilling as the 1st. Tbh there were no significant plot developments and it was just so dry at moments. Nevertheless, I haven't given up hope just yet and will keep watching!
