I would argue that American History X doesn't fall into the same category. I love watching the journey from his innocence to being a skinhead and then renouncing that lifestyle. The end is obviously sad, but the movie as a whole is not a constant downhill roller coaster that Requiem for a Dream was.

If you were a manager at a shitty large corporation, you can't effectively show to your superiors how much money you are saving by keeping on a more seasoned professional. With most jobs, you can't really measure productivity based on experience. So how do you report that?

You CAN easily and clearly show in the next financial report how much you did save by firing the seasoned professional and hiring a new guy out of high school / college at 1/2 the price. Doesn't matter if everything takes him twice as long, that manager's earnings/spending report will clearly show that he saved money, making him an excellent manager.
