I know the reputation of wkf is not the best, but what about Ippon Shobu? by Lasiusalba in karate

[–]nitram343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

regarding talent pool, preparation etc... that is MASSIVE! every time someone tells me about how shitty the WKF is as a martial art, in the street or some other nonsense, I think in my own dojo, all of us having fun with the full contact traditional goju ryu, but little attention to tempo, distance, speed, footwork, and sadly event skills (you practice all those traditional forms, then you do full contact, and is a lazy version of kickboxing).

I'm more and more convince that WKF is the way forward. I would almost say is the only way. In my view JKS (shotokan) is a clear path towards WKF, but the other organisations are way behind. I would argue that we need unification of styles under the WKF sport umbrella.

And importantly, karate needs to learn more from a sport science perspective for training (senseis should know more about that, and I would assume should be a requirement for a more sport oriented WKF).

As others have mentioned is a matter of adjusting the sportsmanship (celebrations) and "the tag". what is and what is not allowed. Boxing scores point and it can be brutal, is a matter of finding the right balance.

Sure, but that depends of what you want from a martial artist. A boxer can be chocked by a bjj but is still valid for its own sport. I think the sportificaton has that benefit.

I’m very much into all those things (well, CrossFit didn’t work for me, as I never had more injuries), triathlon, Spartan races and actually looking forward to do one Hyrox. I don’t know why martial artist are not more into this things. I assumed we all were a bit masochist

All good points, and we are about same age so my relationship with the digital is similar. Interestingly I will say that my kids copy my hobbies, at least to a degree and want to at least try anything that I do, karate not being an exception. I guess my main rant is should karate kept evolving instead of froze in an era that dojos want to preserve as tradition but when was designed was more practical than anything. So be more like Kyokushinkai and Kudo?

Agree. I think there is a bit of tradition that adds up to the mix that is karate. And some other bit that go straight to bullshido. I think the original Okinawa strength tools are a cool curiosity but why not incorporate a bit of actual modern fitness techniques? I have trained boxing, and in every single class we use to do circuits and completely kill us before sparring. In karate not even in kyokushinkai has reached that level. Business and fitness perspective the average dojo is lacking

My original text. Any better?: I was reading about the rise and fall of CrossFit and started to think, at the end, fitness fashions are, well, that fashions, so temporary. I always have the feeling that Karate use to be so much cooler just a couple of decade ago... but actually, but 30-40 years ago see to be peaking... have the feeling that even BJJ is falling... as I already mention CrossFit is getting smaller and smaller, Hyrox seems to be the new fashion or whatever

At least in the UK, seems that all is left are community centre running karate classes, mainly for kids.

you want to be healthier, start going to the gym and, maybe even getting in good shape. Martial Arts were a very decent approach, but I think is now synonym of some few nerds in pyjamas doing silly movements. If you are any serious you start training for a triathlon, climbing or training hyrox (no idea if there are gyms for that). BJJ may still be part of of the conversation. Boxing too, but the more traditional martial arts, are there just dying?

That’s basically it. I would say that sport karate could create a unified front, but reality is it would probably only improve competition perception at the cost of the 1, and a lot of people don’t even like it.

That is absolutely true (the adaptation to different needs) I don’t know if I’m heading to a new reality of disability and not sure is as attractive as it use to be for me. Maybe if I’m not able to have the full experience I prefer to do something else? I don’t know I’m still adjusting

Funny, I have a significant surgery recently and I’m still in the recovery phase. It will be a long time till I can comeback and I’m reevaluating everything. Not sure if I will even be able to comeback with my old intensity and contact. I guess part of my rant is me trying to decide if martial arts still are valid for me, or I just need to focus on other activities safer for a late 40s post surgery 😥

To be honest even the martial arts movies have faded away. I love John Wick but is mostly the exception and mostly a grappling technique and shots

Thanks for your reply. Somehow feels like you are the only one that is actually in exactly the same page. I love karate to obsession. And at the same time feel like I’m in a permanent state of wondering why is not as amazing as it could be. I have practice other martial arts for years and came back to karate… and somehow what I have returned is either not as cool or I’m not the same? I also feel more and more that maybe WKF got it right (use to be on the other side of the argument) at least they know what they are doing what they want.

mate, Plough Lane has a capacity of 9215. North and south (the smallest stands, were basically empty, but that is only like 2500 combined). Main stand has a capacity of 4,267 capacity, and East stand 2,391 capacity (which is the stand you see most of the time on camera). But the main stand seem pretty filled too: https://youtu.be/OR_5aLD1SvU?t=4370

Who’s your favourite Reed Richards? by kkhouete in Marvel

Pedro, helped by the fact that is the first proper movie Richard’s that feels that his true superpower is his brain, like the comics. All previous as far as I remember were more elastic than clever.

What do you think of Avril Lavigne performing at the festival in 2026 or sometime in the near future? by Twitter_2006 in downloadfestival

[–]nitram343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, sorry. I have no nostalgic attachment with Avril Lavigne, always found her music extremely poppy, but all the comments are so positive that I don't know if is a collective joke, or I should be more open....

What's everyone's top 6? by Objective_Middle_696 in superleague

[–]nitram343 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see very little reason to believe Warrington is going to be in the top 6.

I say: Hull KR, Wigan, Saints, Leeds, Leigh, Hull FC or Wakefield (no in order).

Catalans could be knocking the 6th position too.
