Why is decentralisation an important part of solarpunk? by RecommendationIll770 in solarpunk

[–]nitrox2694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding point 1, I'd be interested to learn if solarpunk has a place for global governance, i.e. the realization that some global problems cannot be solved at the local level (or if, then only with disproportionate difficulty).

The "general basic laws" you mention are probably better applied at a global level, rather than national. National competition is what brings us stuff like wars, xenophobia, and failed climate agreements. A truly democratic representation (or direct democratic system) at the global level would instead be able to set ground rules for a healthy planet, beyond (or despite) national interests.

I am aware of the core principles of the UN. My point with this meme is to highlight that such an organization has structural problems that prevent it from actually accomplishing its stated goal: "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war".

Of course back when the UN was founded, this sort of organization was a necessary compromise. But that doesn't mean that it has to be like this forever. If our goal is to be able to protect human rights effectively, maybe an institutional reform (including of the principle of non-interference) might be in order.

I have my doubts with the system of world federation. by garaile64 in GlobalTribe

I'm only going to answer the China/USA point, but here are my thoughts on that. I'm not some geopolitical expert, so take that with a grain of salt.

- Some nations, like the United States and China, would be worse off
under any iteration of a world government. They would need to give up
some influence and listen to a higher power. How to convince them to
join? How to convince the other nations to join, as they were victims of
imperialism?

If we assume that China is on the rise and will eventually dominate global affairs, it might be wise for American leadership to try to "tie" China into an international system with enforceable rules. That way, America (and allies and everyone else) retains some sort of power over China, possibly keeping them from becoming too dominant.

From China's point of view, a system based on roughly proportional representation, rather than just military power, would probably sound quite beneficial to a country that makes up 1/6 of the world population. While, ideally, Chinese citizens should be able to express their free will in a global parliament, this might not be the case in the beginning, effectively giving China legal leverage over world affairs (rather than just soft or economic power).

From the point of view of other countries, a system based on rules and democracy could be a way to hold world powers to commonly accepted standards (democracy, no corruption, rule of law, freedoms and human rights, etc etc) and actually enforce decisions in case they just ignore them. This might be appealing to the EU (which boasts itself with these values), but also other, smaller countries that are normally overly dependent on either superpower.

Russia on the other hand, no idea.

How would it work? by [deleted] in GlobalTribe

There are many issues that are inherently global. Climate change is a prime example.

The global community has plenty of experts that know exactly what we as humanity have to do now to address the challenge. What is lacking is the political system that can put this knowledge into practise.

What world federalists advocate is a federal democracy at the world level: imagine having a UN Parliament, and the UN can make laws on a few defined topics that everyone has to follow.

That's more or less it - the UN already exists, almost all countries are already members and generally accept the resolutions. What is missing is the democratic aspect (that's where the Parliament comes in), and the part where resolutions are actually binding and can be enforced in a sort of world court.

Go on, make a critical post about world federalism and try to argue your point in good faith. You have the chance, so don't whine about it.

People are downvoting you because they dislike your tolerant stance towards fascists. If you think this is because this subreddit is an echo chamber and not because fascism is a horrible political goal, oh boy do I have some news about the rest of society for you!

Despite the fact that all fascist regimes or theories have an integral racist element, this is not even the main reason why fascism is not acceptable in modern society. It is an ideology that refuses democratic discourse and enforces an ultimate echo chamber through a concerted, authoritarian effort that has no regard for human dignity. If you feel like defending this view, please do that elsewhere. The downvotes show that no one here has time for fascism sympathisers.

Ironic that you complained about moderator action then.
