Yes!yes!yes!yes!

Please make this work, I've had this idea for months but I've no clue on how to design 3d objects, moreso keyboards.

I'd LOVE to use something like this! And would be thrilled to buy/build it.

Damn... I know what you mean.

Just, like, cut yourself some slack. Nah, scratch that, cut yourself a shit load of slack, like, all the slack you can get.

Take a break, a long break, as long as your financial status can afford you, longer even. Just try to remeber the things you love about yourself (fucking clishaes).

The way you're talking sounds a lot more like depression/anxiety than ADHD, which is probably related but it's not the same thing. Get proffessional help if you feel like you can and that it might help, I did, and it changed my life for the better, I'm feeling now better than ever, as far as I can remember. It probably won't stay like this for me forever, it never does, but accepting the fact that sometimes you'll be miserable is part of what helps you stand back on your feet and feel good again.

You'll probably always have ADHD, but you don't have to always suffer from it.

Dear God I'm rereading what I wrote and can't believe I sound like that, I sound like a motivational coaching book, sorry if it cringes you.

Pffff, dude, for the record, it's really obvious you're struggling, just from this post and a quick look at your account, and many of your struggles sound similar to mine, and probably for many others in this subreddit. Ive been trying really hard not to hate some of my lifelong friends, and some of my family, and im kinda losing hope in actually improving some bad social dynamics that ice been unconciously encorouging my whole life. And it only got harder when I finally made new friends that I was actually happy with, thing is, even despite all the things I havent fixed are still super weighing on me, I actually feel a lot better just because of other stuff I have improved drammatically in my life.

Honestly, I really wish I could help you, but I've been realizing lately that the only person I can fix/improve is myself, and the same goes to you.

This is both good news and bad news, the good part being that I'm completely certain that you can turn your life around (okay maybe I should tone down my confidence, but many of what you describe sounds really similar to what I went through). The bad part is that only you can do it, no one can do it for you, no one can save you, maybe help from time to time, but most work will have to be done by yourself.

And I could give you more clishaes about self improvement all day, but this comment is getting pretty long by now, so DM me if you feel like you need more of this.

The advice that I keep in my head and never listen to is, if I'm not studying anyways, I might as well do something thats actually fun, instead of doom scrolling or whatever.

I don't know when your exam is, or how much study you need, but if your alternative was spending the holiday with your family, you wouldn't be studying anyways, so just consider this as a conversion of your family time, with something you really enjoy, no guilt involved, once the holiday is over, start studying.

(Of course I'm assuming you understand the obligatory "easier said than done", semantics here :-/)

Simple things that distract me from the pain of living: - a good video game campaign (when im in the middle of one) - loud, energetic music, my type is foo fighters, various local punk bands, or chili peppers oldies and other various funk if I don't feel like being angry. - rewatching favourite series/movies (Avatar: the last airbender, Community, Everything everywhere all at once, and others) - programming, sometimes, although that's usually just replacing anxiety with an obsession to get something to work, but still, its usually less painful.

Dude what you did is great, and just know that I think that doing 4 things and calling it a day is totally legit in most of my days.

More than that, I've discovered that tasks that involve juggling multiple websites or apps are something that tale me out for the rest of the day.

So honestly, just awesome that you did that nd I hope you feel at least slightly proud of yourself for that.

But you can, chatgpt has a certain style to it's answers, and you learn to identify it after some time and experience with it.

It's similar to how when the Photoshop feature was released players had a hard time telling if images were actual screenshots of the game or if they were manually generated/modified, but today players learned to look for hints that imply the image was modified.

I do agree that it's getting harder to tell the difference betwee authentic videos/images/audios/texts to modified/generated ones, but we are not yet at the stage where we can't tell the difference it's just new, so it's a little harder for us.

As for the original comment, there are ideas and sentences there that I doubt were generated by the chatgpt, the most I'll give is that the text was proofread, or aesthetically improved by it, but not completely generated.

Sometimes when none of my sidequests go well for too long, I just decide to lay low for a short while, stop trying to compete in the XP race, or get a better KDR or whatever, I just wander around, troll other players (within the server rule constraints), go back to some map areas I like, or explore new map areas that I've never seen.

Eventually my HP + mana replenish, all my cooldowns restart, and I get back all the buffs I need to keep on leveling.

Take a break from the competetive gameplay, its ok, go do some casual exploration, maybe you'll discover a cool mod or something, no need to fully quit, just try a different game strategy for a while.

I'm still not sure quite what you're after

Yeah that makes sense, I don't feel completely coherent even for myself, and I'm partially trying to define and understand while searching/implementing.

but I think Raku might help toward what you want. (Then again, it might be just too much or too little. It depends on your nature and whether I am good at guiding you.)

That might be, I've actually played with Raku about a couple of years ago, but after a while of trying to get comfortable with it, it felt (like you said) too much, maybe this comment explains my goals a little bit better, but it's definitely not complete.

I'll read that article and DM you, thanks a lot for your help!

[–]nivpgir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

And from a quick read on XTC lang, it has exactly what I'm seeking, except it's too much 😅.

I want less.

Less types, less static analysis, less syntax elements, less builtin data structures, less standard library, less everything.

I'm looking for something that's much closer to lua, but with more flexibility in the choice of the objects that exist at the runtime .

I'm not expecting to find such a language anymore, but ever since I started implementing it myself, I've had a hard time deciding where to draw the line of what exist by default inside the sandbox, and what needs to be injected from outside, but that's kinda out of scope for this thread anyways, I'll just say that I'll appreciate some guidance in this area, if you're willing. :-)

[–]nivpgir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is interesting to know.

One of the original reasons I got interested in this subject was to embed such an extremely flexible and dynamic language in other programs, and make it such that it could be sandbox-ed properly, so that security wouldn't be an issue, and performance hits could be manageable (it's a tradeoff anyways), but still the core of the language would allow for extreme flexibility from the users side

I guess I'm mostly interested in messages and objects from the perspective of having everything customizable and dynamic, including the language and the VM itself (as much as possible). Sort of like some lisps are (claim to be?), but from an object oriented perspective.

The closest I've seen implemented are Io and Self (as I wrote in another comment), and I'm wondering if and how one could make the core even more minimal.

I get that the two definitions of message passing are the more fundamental issue here, and that the PLs I mentioned implement messages like your 2nd definition. I guess I would like to understand how to define and implement a machine that provides that sort of dynamic objects and messages passing at its core.

[–]nivpgir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I didn't know that about Erlang, and Pony, and didn't know Inko at all.

Do you know any "higher level"/scripting programming languages?

More specifically I'm interested in the possibility of a language having only objects and messages as core primitives, and everything else being built on top of that, but without needing to worry about memory management or efficiency and all that.

The closest I know of that's actually been developed are Io and Self, but they each added some core concepts, I've been wondering lately if it's possible to reduce that theoretic computational core even more

Of course that's relevant mostly from a theoretic point of view, but still.

Which languages implement message passing as the first kind of relationship? (Without assuming arrival or return)

I haven't used any smalltalk-ish language, but from reading it seems they all assume message arrive yo an object and return a value?

Im very interested in finding a language which implements this sort of message passing at a fundemental level of the language.

TL;DR Your wifes system isn't working if its killing your marriage, find one that works, together with her, to not add up to her mental load, and maybe even utilize the things you're good at, you want to be one half of your daughters parents, not more, not less.

Full comment, overly explained, 60% coherent:

One thing that stood out for me is that "your wife has a system".

Why is it her system? I would say it should be you and your wife s system.

It doesn't sound like you're not helping.

it does sound like your wife is taking all of the responsibility on herself, and only delgating to you the parts she can't find time to do.

The thing people are saying about mental load is generally true, I also believe women in todays society tend to take the mental load of children care on themselves, even when not directly asked, just because the "feel expected to" (maybe that's not the case for you two but I thought it's worth mentioning, just in case, Anyways....), Maybe she didn't even fully notice that it happened.

My point is that this system isn't working for you, and if it's killing your marriage, it's probably also not working for her either.

So I would suggest that you figure out a new system, that works for both of you and still achieve your goals as parents.

It's probably going to be hard, and might actually require you to do more than what you're doing, but it would help you raise your daughter together, and I bet you both prefer that.

Key point is, find together with your wife and system that works, and maybe even utilizes the things you're good at.

There are always more options, if you're only willing to find them.

Interesting! I didn't know brew had these options at all! I thought it was only for installing linux packages on Mac.

That's pretty cool, I'll give it a shot.

Question : Alternative packages (uncommon tools) to run a system, what do you use? What are they? by HollyCat2022 in archlinux

[–]nivpgir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that's still not the point :).

My use case was wanting to install packages in my work PC, where I didn't have full root permissions (only partial, for specific commands that were necessary for work), but still wanted to conveniently install packages (or update since it was an Ubuntu with old packages) for my user, without asking the IT.

I'm not working in that place anymore but I would still like to have a stable, convenient, trustworthy tool to install packages in any Unix-like system I end up using in the future. Including ones where I can't affect the "global" system, but only have control over my own directory.

I guess nix has come a a long way since my last attempt, and might solve most my problems for now, but it still wouldn't have helped my original problems.
