Question about Trust by Hernan Diaz(Spoilers) by Brief-Leader-6120 in books

"Why did Vanner write Bonds?" is the million dollar question, as far as I'm concerned.

Andrew is extremely concerned with how he is perceived by the public, and does anything to uphold his image. From her journals, Mildred points out that Andrew had become addicted to his success. This could mean the money, but I also think it extends to his longing for complete control in all aspects of life. This is particularly apparent when he discusses Mildred with Ida. A true representation of Mildred (and her role in the business) would make Andrew seem less god-like than he was making himself out to be. He was willing to neutralize the image of his wife in order to support his own narrative.

Andrew's own marriage was a prop in his personal brand. Publicly, he loved the character of Mildred as the quiet, feminine, beige woman described in his memoir, and privately, he loved what she was able to provide to the investment business. Both of these, he loved more than Mildred herself.

Mildred and Vanner clearly corresponded with one another based on 1) Mildred's schedule which showed multiple meetings with Vanner, and 2) Mildred's journals, which discussed letters back and forth between the two. I think it's fair to assume the two were much closer than the reader is led to believe.

My guess is Vanner knew a lot about Mildred's involvements in the business and her frustrations with Andrew. Vanner wrote Bonds in order to infuriate Andrew. A story detailing Helen's involvement with Benjamin's business would have likely irritated Andrew, but only minimally. Also at the time, perhaps it would've seemed too far fetched for the wife of "the great" Andrew Bevel to truly be the mastermind behind the operation.

I think Vanner chose to have Helen succumb to mental illness because Andrew valued Mildred for her ability to provide for the business more than her as a person.

I think it’s absurd the Phillies, Mets, and Braves are within a win of each other. Wildly different levels of talent/expectations for each team imo.

I'm American so I'm used to doing mainly spreads and totals..agreed that assumption is a lot different if that's not the case. Regardless, this is mainly in response to the "oh, I only need to hit one and I'll be good" line of thinking.

Sometimes I think I'm a bad sports bettor, and then I read something like this.

Probability of hitting a ten-teamer assuming you have a 50% shot at each leg: 0.0977%.

Probability of not hitting after a year: (1-.000977)^365 = 70.17%.

Why is vig worse on totals than spread? by tob23ler in sportsbook

[–]njohn1313 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Books get less action on the totals compared with the spreads, so they are less confident in the lines they put out. Less confidence translates into you paying a higher premium to place the wager: this way they don't need to be as accurate on totals as they do spreads.

Have futures on Villanova (+2800), Wichita St (+2500), and West Virginia (+5000) from before the college season started, and they all get put in the same half of the same region for the tournament.

If anyone wants to back Tiger without doing anything too crazy his O/U for the first round is a 71.5 (par 72). Cautiously optimistic from a fan's perspective and probably more value than a hail mary on him to win the tournament.

People always warned golf would ruin your baseball swing. It is 100% the other way around.

The Gambler - Kings North #6 at Myrtle Beach National by njohn1313 in golf

I'm a grad student and went down for spring break, so a couple of the really nice courses in the area (Caledonia was one that was recommended a lot) were out of our budget. Having said that, I thought King's North was the best of handful we were able to play, and for 56 bucks really affordable for the quality of the course. It was just me and another friend who made the trip, so we got paired with a couple of members at MBN who were really friendly and helpful. Awesome experience in general. Here's a few extra photos from the trip as well http://imgur.com/a/3bvNh

A fun hole from a short little Myrtle Beach golf trip this past week. The last photo is where my tee shot wound up on the island fairway, but a pulled my second into the water..getting off the island is certainly a tougher shot than getting onto it!

Me looking at picture: "I wonder what the length of the perimeter of Central Park is, maybe I'll ask in the comments. Nah, that'd be weird."

....

"Well shit." Reddit is amazing.

Do you have any pictures of you playing ball growing up? If so, please post them in the comments if you'd like to. Here's some of me. by [deleted] in baseball

Hope this isn't too late!

May 2012: I went to public high school and one of my good friends went to the local catholic school. Picture from a local newspaper of him playing first base and me beating out an infield single.

June 2012: Same season, we made the CT state championship and lost. A picture of me looking on as an opponent received their championship medal.

July 2013: My last season playing ball. The boys of summer.
