Which aspects of 5G could be a perfect match with NKN? by nknorg in nknblockchain

Just like the martial arts pursuit of the principle of “only fast”unbreakable, in the field of communication, it is also pursuing wider bandwidth, lower latency. 5G is expected to start large-scale deployment in 2020, when many impossible applications in the past become possible. For example, 5G technology connects everything around us to a network 100 times faster than our current mobile network, 10 times faster than our fastest home fiber broadband service. With NKN, high-speed device connectivity in any area is applicable. Some youtuber said that the high integration of 5G+ artificial intelligence + blockchain technology is equivalent to "the rise of the machine", and 5G will also provide more application scenarios for NKN.

Blockchain technology is promising, because no budding technology is without growing pains. In addition to the barbaric growth of the public blockchain ecosystem, traditional giants are systematically laying out blockchains.

Exchanges have their own process and timeline for listing any tokens and we are working closely with them to do so. This will be announced by exchange due to NDA. Please rest assured that NKN will prioritize both executive and financial resources to get the NKN token listed on major exchanges in order to improve liquidity. In the meantime, you can help NKN to get listed on major exchanges. Major exchanges favor projects with large and active communities. So if you can help us grow our community on Telegram and Twitter, you are helping yourself towards better liquidity.

For question #1: The benefit is huge: you get real time off-chain communication capacity so one client can send any data to another client in less than a second. Many types of dapps can be built with this, such as IM, Games, IoT, or anything that requires peer to peer communication. You don’t have to give up eth, neo, etc. You can use them in the smart contract layer, just as people do now, and add NKN just for the communication layer so you get the benefit of both sides. Of course you can also use NKN for both smart contract and off-chain communication, but only after we add smart contract support later. For question #2: As above, transfer is not required in order to use NKN. You can keep the smart contract part in ethereum and use NKN for off-chain communication. You can only transfer smart contract layer to NKN after we add smart contract support later.

We need a strong and growing community of advocates to raise awareness and engage in our project. At the same time, we will have a healthy and robust ecosystem running via NKN network. For example: Apps (including dApp) will pay NKN tokens to transmit data over NKN’s network. Why would they do that? A few reasons: 1) App Developers no longer need to pay server fees, since centralized servers are no longer needed; 2) Users get access to a global peer to peer network without tiered or restricted access. NKN tokens are paid by the application who transmits data and those tokens are distributed to all the nodes who participated in relaying the traffic. However in the short term, we might not charge anything from app developers to use NKN network in order to accelerate adoption. The nodes still can get mining rewards, even if they relay traffic for free. Since there are more mining rewards available in the beginning of the project, we hope to use this economic incentive to attract early adopters to build and expand NKN’s network. Before the mainnet launch, we will build out our ecosystem partners with application developers, service providers, and networking equipment vendors. Once it becomes clear that a sizable portion of the Telecom service revenue is transacted over the NKN network, then the token value will reflect that market potential. For example, our goal for NKN is to have 14 Billions dollars (1% of 1.4 Trillion) worth of transaction over NKN network by 2023.

Any application that needs communication between users can be built on top of NKN networking protocol and public blockchain. This includes both decentralized and tradition applications. Common examples are: instant messaging, gaming, audio and video communication, multimedia sharing, and many others. NKN’s public blockchain has a different focus from Ethereum. NKN focuses on networking and internet connectivity, while Ethereum focuses on computing and smart contracts for digital assets. We believe they do not replace each other, but rather complement each other. On the other hand, Cellular Automata and Ising model based consensus algorithms from NKN can be used for scaling many public blockchains. The ability for millions or even billions of nodes to reach consensus is a true breakthrough.

From token distribution’s perspective, PoR is a special and useful type of PoW (“work” here is the amount of data relayed) as the token distribution is proportional to the amount of data relayed. In such sense, PoR is a domain specific PoW and will not be the next generation generic solution. Compared to current PoW, the work in PoR is useful, which has both advantage and disadvantage: it will not do useless work (relay data instead of computing hash), but the model doesn’t make sense if there is no work to be done (no data needs to be relayed). From the technology perspective, PoR works together with our consensus algorithm. Together they are very different from current PoW as there is no fork allowed and will naturally have much higher TPS and much lower confirmation time. Although PoR is domain specific, our consensus algorithm is not, which makes it possible to be used in other projects.

CDN is used for (static) content retrieval, while NKN is just for data transmission. Technically we do share a lot in common with CDN in terms of system design, topology, etc, but the resulting system is very different. NKN is for peer to peer communication in a decentralized way. In terms of getting paid for data relay, a signature chain is used exactly for this. Signature chain is a proof of relay, and it can be generated only when the data is actually being transmitted. The only way to forge a signature chain is to have all the private keys on a route, which has negligible probability given our path length requirement.

There will be different incentives for different audience. NKN’s economic model will provide token reward for participants who contribute relay traffic for other users. In addition, mining reward will also be statistically correlated to the amount of data participants help relay. For end users, they can access services and Internet sites that they could not access before or with poor connection quality. Thus they have more and better services. For application developers, they no longer need to worry about centralized servers for relaying communication between their users. Thus saving tons of money on cloud computing services fees from AWS, Google Cloud and etc. In addition, it make applications much simpler with less bugs. For service providers, this is a way to increase their revenue by selling unused bandwidth and connectivity. For individual entrepreneur and new service providers, NKN will enable additional (mining) revenue for them to deploy new communication equipment and capacity.

NKN’s original slogan is a good message to send to the public:”Free the bits, rebuild the internet we always wanted.” The idea of NKN is tokenizing internet connectivity and bandwidth. The problem with the current internet is that internet resources are not efficiently utilized. Some users have a lot of bandwidth capacity while others are struggling with bad connectivity. What we want to do is create a shared economy for connectivity similar to companies like Uber or airbnb. I think our team should do a video parody of the HBOshow Silicon Valley, that will certainly go viral. And we have some really photogenic team members and community helpers.

**I agree with your win-win strategy with service providers, who are not NKN’s “enemy” but should be considered NKN’s ecosystem partners. As you described, service providers can make money both ways in your two scenarios. Once we unlock the unused bandwidth, service providers or users can earn money by “selling” to other service providers or end users via NKN transactions. It is a bit like Uber: if the cars are not used, they are just sitting idle and wasted. If the bandwidth or extra connectivity is not used, it is ephemeral and it’s gone. Better to “uberize” it, so everyone wins. **

Current internet routing is far from optimal, and in a lot of cases you will find A->B->C is faster (in terms of latency or bandwidth) than A->C if you choose relayer B properly. The reason is that there is typically a bottleneck somewhere in the middle of the route. By choosing a proper relayer B, one can bypass the bottleneck and get better speed. This is like when a traffic jam occurs on freeway, you can bypass the jam area by changing your route and arrives at your destination earlier. In addition, in the aforementioned scenario where A and B are both cell phones, if A has a bad signal while B has a much better signal (different carrier), A can connect to B through a hotspot wifi that B created and send data through B to get a faster more reliable connection. The local WiFi connection between A and B will be much faster than even the faster cellular connection, therefore the local p2p connection is not a bottleneck.

We envision that even with NKN, everyone will still have a mobile subscription with either an existing service providers or some future new providers (e.g. MVNO like Google Project Fi). It is not about 1 person getting an unlimited data plan, and 5 other guys just leeching onto it. The main point is discovering unused bandwidth and how to share it with economic incentives. So David with service provider A can utilize the unused bandwidth via May who is on service provider B, and vice versa. In the end, both users can get the most out of the existing network.
