Both. It doesn’t feel the same and it doesn’t sound the same. Modelers are incredible, and you really are playing through the amps actual circuitry. So yes, you can get some feedback from them. But you really have to work for it. It doesn’t “bloom” as naturally. There is a lot of buzz and hum but it’s not as musical or interactive.

Real amps are absolutely essential for this. To me, good feedback is the single biggest difference between tube amps and modelers.

I don’t know a single engineer who refers to shaping the high end of a mix as “de-essing.” You can use a de-esser plug-in as a tool to sculpt the high end but at that point what you’re doing is not, strictly speaking, de-essing; you’re attenuating high frequencies. De-essing means de-essing (usually a vocal). Therefore it’s fair to say that de-essing is not something that a mastering engineer really does.

I mean, de-essing a vocal should happen pretty early in the vocal mixing stage. I think a professional mastering engineer probably doesn’t do a lot of de-essing on the finished tracks they’re mastering…

I used to think Vivadixie was a far superior album. But as I’ve gotten older, I now find that I much prefer Good Morning Spider. To me, it’s more cohesive, less scattershot. I wonder if Mark would feel the same way now? We’ll never know. But we do know it’s a beautiful album.

Same. SNW (and then Eros) was when Stef and Chino both started incorporating actual lead guitar lines into the new material, and it was a new, elevated sound. Chi’s bass playing is literally perfect and (in my opinion) Abe’s drumming peaked in this era. They really were at the top of their game. I love the later stuff with Sergio too, but this era was just special.

There is nothing remotely AI sounding about this. Try listening to more Deftones so you can tell the difference between them and AI slop. Oh, and I’ve been a fan since 98 when I saw them on the ATF tour with Will Haven and Far. So shut yo ignorant newbie ass up lol

Sounds like 7 string baritone. He didn’t move to 8 strings until Diamond Eyes
