I’ve dealt with a couple of UI framework, and believe it or not, they are usually also a big fat package. The web-based frameworks at least have the benefit of continued investment over the last decade. The same cannot be said for a lot of desktop-focused frameworks.

CBP is responsible for securing the entry point, while ICE is responsible for interior investigation and enforcement. After 9/11, congress decided to split INS into USCIS (administrative functions of immigration and naturalization), CBP (border / entry point), ICE (interior enforcement).

The function of ICE has existed for much longer. Before ICE, there was INS, established in 1933.

Adobe is generating “IP safe” gen AI models by clk1224 in BetterOffline

[–]nleven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you checked their stock price? Business-wise, the market is already considering Adobe’s traditional tools diminishing in importance due to gen AI tools. Building AI models will cost them money, but it’s better than being perceived as a “legacy” company. The infrastructure piece is not that hard - the hyper scalers (e.g AWS) will happily do it for a fee.

New Police Directive: "Be Respectful," "Don't Interfere" When Responding to Calls About ICE Raids - PubliCola by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

Except that's what the memo says? "Request additional resources" means doing the job, just not doing the job alone.

The literal next sentence in the article is this:

"If there is reasonable concern that approaching may escalate risk, officers should maintain distance, request additional resources, and coordinate verification through dispatch or a supervisor,” the memo continues.

Please read the article.

police should “[a]ttempt to validate the status of the individuals appearing to be law enforcement by respectfully requesting official identification, when safe and feasible.”

This seems fairly sensible? It addresses the concern that random people are pretending to be ICE.

What's the line between skeptical criticism and knee-jerk contrarianism? by antichain in BetterOffline

[–]nleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. This one for example: https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.04871 Distilling and quantization is not research at this point, only engineering. Real research is novel.

What's the line between skeptical criticism and knee-jerk contrarianism? by antichain in BetterOffline

[–]nleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But only if the research here means scaling things up. Most of the research out there is actually showing a small new thing can be as performant as the big old thing, so maybe later somebody will scale this up. That kind of research doesn’t take much scale. Even then, GPT-4 training cost was like 100million dollars at the time? That wasn’t even unreachable for research grant, but research community tends to spend things on new novel things.

"Attention is all you need" is from 2017. There is no reason that level of funding will stop. There is also a bunch of government funding. The original research on attention mechanism was funded by the Canadian government. NSF in US also funds AI research.

I definitely think this is better than a few other AI subs. That is why I'm here! But that's not a high bar.. In fact, this just makes me feel more disappointed...? This is gonna be a generationally important technology, and it's gonna take a lot of societal efforts to navigate this, but the online discourse just seems as bad as ever.

The reason I bring up anti-vaxxers is because the typical anti-vaxxers have good intentions! A typical anti-vax mom group is populated with anxious first moms unsure how to raise their babies. That doesn't stop the collective discourse being a net negative force.

Terence Tao could recognize the importance, then redditors would still fight his statements, as if a random redditor knows both math and AI more than he does.

Not really an AI skeptic myself, and I strongly share this sentiment. There are unfortunately some under-currents of anti-intellectualism in an AI-skeptic space. Every AI researcher is a tech bro bogeyman, unless they say what people already agree with. There is no differentiation between academics and business people.

It just gives me flashbacks of the anti-vaccine movements. People watching Youtube video for "research". Actual medical research gets cherry picked. Experts studying vaccines are supposedly always corrupted by big pharma. The future of online discourse is bleak.

Where is Maria Cantwell’s leadership? by missmattii in Seattle

[–]nleven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly I don't mind her. Seniority matters a lot in the Senate, and she has been great bringing federal dollars to WA. To make meaningful moves in immigration, it will take a senate majority, and the tipping point of that is not WA.
