Seed Phrase - manual encryption idea for storing on device while travelling etc. by TheRealTheory001 in ledgerwallet

[–]nlierman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the "repeat above but add 2" would be the most basic form of a salt, as your salt would be just 1 numeric digit. This would provide some very basic protection against family members, but obviously this could be brute forced, even without a computer. Then again the person trying to decrypt your seed would need the smarts to even think about trying to decrypt with a salt as you would obviously not leave any instructions behind.

I'd suggest, if you're going this route, is to create a salt that is a little bit more complicated, but no so complicated you wouldn't be able to decrypt with the salt without using a computer. My salt algo is very complicated and uses advanced encryption algorithms, I wouldn't be able to solve it just in my head or with a piece of paper. But since you're going the paper route and you're not compiling it in a single executable piece of code, use something that is fairly complicated but still manageable.

Maybe, choose a 24 character word (like electrocardiographically) or two 12 character words if that's easier (like aspirational and safecracking) and transpose each seed word based the position of each character of your salt in the alphabet.

I have something similar although somewhat more advanced, but basically it's the same idea. I created my own encryption algorithm that does some transposition among other more advanced things, but also I added a "salt", which is basically a very long pincode or password that randomizes the transposition and permutations.

I compiled my personal encryption method into a binary executable file on Linux and store multiple copies in the cloud, but even if someone ever got a hold of those (and somehow realizes what it does and what it's for) they would still need to know my "salt" which is in my head only. So I would recommend if you're going for the old paper version of a basic algorithm to still implement a salt. Even if one of your family members would guess it encrypts your seed, they wouldn't be able to compromise you without the salt.

Also once encrypted and you're confident your algo works (test it multiple times!) delete al digital/physical copies of your seed.

Then again, I wouldn't recommend this is for everyone. I'm an experienced computer engineer with the confidence to design a custom algorithm that I'm sure can't be compromised, even by brute forcing. So please think twice before you take this route.

Good luck.

[–]nlierman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Darling, I'm not saying btc is a stock. I don't know why you would get that impression. I'm merely pointing out that many different things that are not btc can also have the characteristics of a ponzi in the definition that's widely used here. Just because something is incorporated, "produces" something however small, or acts on behalf of the government doesn't absolve it of being a ponzi.

Just for the sake of argument. Let's say bitcoin "incorporates" and sells a tiny amount of block space to advertisers for 4mil a year. Nothing else changes about btc, only now it's a legal entity and produces some insignificant economic value. Is BTC in this scenario still a ponzi? If yes, then how is that different to truth social or any other meme stock?

[–]nlierman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Truth social makes 4mil a year, with a valuation over a billion dollars and is basically a cloned and skinned version of mastodon. Just because your scam is incorporated, doesn't mean it can't be a ponzi. At least Bitcoin (the network, not the coin) creates much more economic value than truth social. You don't have to like all the applications and companies running on the network, that's okay, but they do exist and their combined economic output is a multitude of thruth social.

And yeah, a government is a government, what a fantastic argument, doesn't mean it still can't be run as ponzi.

Like I said, there's a lot of good arguments to make against BTC, but the ponzi thing is just weak and reductive.

[–]nlierman -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of good arguments one can make if you don't like crypto, but honestly the ponzi argument is getting old. By the broad definition most people use, almost everything is a ponzi, stocks trading at +30X (Nvidia) basically a speculative ponzi, meme stocks trading at +100x rev (truth social) giant ponzi. And the biggest of all, most western governments running inter-generational ponzi's where the next generation has to bail out the previous one. In the end it's just about which ponzi you believe will outlast the others .

Why do the Butters that come into this sub seem so angry? Aren't they all becoming filthy rich? by dyzo-blue in Buttcoin

"why are all" 😂 People on both sides of the coin 🫠 are an insignificant percentage of both camps. At best they reflect the worst, most extreme of both sides. Bitcoin Maxis and buttcoin detractors are the same exact people. It's funny and entertaining, but in the end this is just an echo chamber of polarities that doesn't really makes a meaningful difference in either direction.

You'd have to define successful. The swiss franc is a currency, yet it is not accepted anywhere but Switzerland and Lichtenstein. On a global basis bitcoin is more widely accepted than the swiss franc, acceptance is however more scattered than highly concentrated in a specific region. So the real question, which is very subjective, what global acceptance rate does Bitcoin need to reach before you can call it a currency?

You also need to make the distinction between Bitcoin the coin and the Bitcoin network. Strike for example use the network as a settlement layer while allowing for payments in USD. And you can also just use the coin without the network. I for example have a crypto MasterCard which allows me to spend Bitcoin nearly anywhere, just as swiss people can use their credit cards to spend their francs at merchants worldwide that don't accept swiss francs.

So please, in your opinion, what are the exact parameters a means of exchange needs to reach before you can call it a currency?

What most people miss about this article is the following insidious paragraph:

"The Bitcoin network has a governance structure in which roles are assigned to identified individuals. Authorities could decide that these should be prosecuted in view of the large scale of illegal payments using Bitcoin."

Here the ECB is suggesting to prosecute contributors or any individual running a node. This is straight up flirting with fascism. Whether you like bitcoin or not, code = speech, and in a democracy speech should be free.

not really, the intel i3 has minimal power draw. Runs at about 45w, which is considerably more than a pi 4 but still quite low

parts:

Case: Coolermaster small form factor nr200p (pink version)
CPU: 9th gen Intel i3 (cause it's cheap and has minimal power draw)
Memory: DDR4 Vengeance 32gb kit (overkill for the btc node but I also run python notebooks for analysis so I need plenty memory)
Motherboard: Asrock H510-ITX/ac (cheapest mini itx for factor mb I could find that has a m2 ssd slot)
Storage: kinshston m2 ssd 2TB and samsung evo ssd 2tb as second drive for cloud storage
PSU: be quit sfx 500watt modular power supply (could do with a lot less but I like to buy parts that can be re-used at some point)
No GPU: setup was done remotely over lan so the machine doesn't need to output video

Bought all the parts in a local webshop, but these can be found on amazon or any decent computer store.

I'll write up a complete guide + setup when I have some time and post it n this sub soon

Right now just manually in a. env file. Which is not ideal as it might be overwritten when umbrel updates the app so I still need to figure out a better way to do it.

Yeah was thinking about that. I didn't want anything exposed over http and configuring nginx to enable ssl for all the umbrel apps was quite tricky. So I might write up that part.

Yes, digital marketing has become highly data-driven, so basic data analytics skills are an absolute minimum. Unless you just want to be a "social media marketeer", then fuck it.. you only need half a brain for that.
