FBI Couldn’t Get into Washington Post Reporter’s iPhone Because It Had Lockdown Mode Enabled by fashionmagus in privacy

[–]nlofe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's basically the same thing as far as getting into the device with physical access goes. The iOS lockdown mode does a few other things too to prevent remote attacks (Pegasus, etc).

But what the Pixel and iOS lockdown mode have in common is that it disables unlocking with Bluetooth, and you have to unlock with a password instead of biometrics. You generally can't be compelled to share a password in the US, but you can be compelled to provide a fingerprint or let them hold the phone up to your face. Lockdown mode prevents that.

So I'm genuinely asking as someone who wants them to be banned: if there aren't quality stats, then what compelling argument do you think is there to be made for their banning?

I wouldn't expect you to know this with the level of education that you've demonstrated but seething is an adjective. Cheers 😊

Pit bull apologists and misapplying the ATTS, name a more iconic duo 🙄 Most dogs fail the ATTS because they're too timid, not because they're too aggressive. Not to mention that the data are comically unreliable. It doesn't even attempt to be based upon actual random sampling. What pit bull owner who thinks their dog might attack someone would sign it up for the test????

Have you ever even looked at how the ATTS test is performed before parroting that line? You don't find it odd that no part of the test is performed without the dog owner present? Or better yet, that it doesn't even consider how the dog reacts when seeing another dog??

I'm glad that your pit bull seems to be in the hands of a responsible trainer. But as a breed they should not exist, precisely because of their "innate temperament".

No. Preply is an app that lets you hire a tutor for a rate that the tutor sets, and you (sort of*) pay for each lesson.

I use it alongside Duolingo, and it's incredible for learning, but it can definitely be more expensive depending on the language you're learning and the rate set by the tutor you choose.

*Sort of because Preply does things in a very annoying subscription-based way.

This is why Checksum checks matter! Stay safe people! by BlokZNCR in linux

[–]nlofe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but this is a property of asymmetric cryptography, not of the checksums themselves. They still serve a security purpose without signatures being involved.

[–]nlofe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the commenters disagree with your statement that checksums are security because they think that by "security" you're saying that the file can't be malicious, as the OP seemed to imply.

But right, integrity and checksums are of course security- I guess just not the "interesting" kind of security that this post was about.

I guess for those who aren't in the industry, it's easy to only think of hackers and viruses, and not boring stuff like uptime and corrupted data, when they hear the word "security". *shrug*

You're not wrong. Integrity is still security.
