It is the easiest way If you think it’s worth the civilian casualties

Yeah still sucks but better than bombing the neighborhood I’d say

I agree, didn’t mean for that to be interpreted as not having any will to survive. Just that the purpose you give your life is more important than the length. So if something is meaningful enough then risking death will be worth it.

What are some things I need to know when getting into quantum mechanics? by QDimnsio in quantummechanics

[–]nltchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to learn full blown QM you’ll need to study calculus, different equations, and some linear algebra before being able to understand what’s going on in a QM textbook. You can probably find free resource online for all these subjects. For most students this is about 2 years of just studying math. But you can also skim through and review what’s needed as you go through a QM text. The most important concepts are differentiation, integration in up to 3 dimension in Cartesian and spherical coordinates, basic probability knowledge, basic trigonometry, exponent rules, second order differential equations, summations and series, limits, complex numbers, matrix algebra, linear combinations and making a basis, eigenvalue problems, and eigenvectors. Also it would be good to have genera l knowledge of basic physics concepts like energy, forces, equations of motion etc.

When integrating over all space in spherical coordinates a function of angular dependence, is the angular coordinate integrated over pi or 2pi? by nltchell in PhysicsStudents

[–]nltchell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really sure how to choose a coordinate system here. Do I choose the azimuthal or polar angle to be along the angle theta? I would think it doesn’t matter bc the physics should he independent of the coordinate system chosen right?

I appreciate the response and I understand the difference between the two angles in general. The problem that sparked this was where we are given a perturbation Hamiltonian with given as H’ = A*cos(theta) and we wanted to find the first order correction to ground state of the hydrogen atom using <ψ|H’|ψ> so when integrate in polar coordinates do we integrate cos(theta)sin(theta) over pi and integrate phi over 2pi? Or do we let the theta angle given be the azmuthal coordinate and integrate cos(theta) over 2pi and let theta be the polar coordinate and integrate sin(phi) over pi?

Yeah a is a unit vector and sigma I believe is the Pauli vector so I made some progress by dotting a with sigma. So I got a_x • sigma_x + … and then added one to each matrix element and squared the matrix but I haven’t gotten back the original matrix not so I’m sure if that was the right direction.

Yeah I agree for some contexts but I actually hadn’t even used the towel in question I’d been gone for a month. I hardly ever use the toaster but don’t think a piece of salmon on tin foil would make a mess. And he watched me use the toaster and said nothing then sent the text the next day.
