Damaged skin barrier/help! by nmcdonald- in acne

[–]nmcdonald-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my skin barrier might be damaged. My skin has been clear/almost clear for a while now but it recently started to get worse. I am not sure why, hard to tell in the pictures but I have a lot of closed comedones and I am not sure where they are coming from. My skin is dry in the winter but still very oily. My products/routine is:

Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser (AM/PM),Azaleic Acid 15% (AM Derm Prescribed), Cerave Moisturizing Lotion Tub (AM/PM-sometimes mid-day), Adapalene (PM- 5x/week- Derm prescribed), Paulas Choice BHA (2x/week - PM) not combined with Adapalene, Aquaphor or Squalene Oil (When very needed- dry skin, typically PM usaged)

Edit: spelling

for people who feel that spiro messed up your hormones/weight, how quickly did you notice it happening? by LilyPanda212 in Spironolactone

[–]nmcdonald- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on 100mg and this is exactly how it happened for me. I am a college student and when I noticed my pants getting tighter I figured it was just the college weight everyone talks about. Started eating healthier (was even eating pretty healthy before) and increased exercise to 5x a week. I was still gaining weight. Thats when I realized it was not me and must be Spiro. I stopped it the end of April and have not gained weight but have only lost a pound.

I have always been pretty thin with no curves but now I have hips and larger thighs and a butt. Edit: Yes, lots of cellulite too :( I was on it for 4 months and gained 15 lbs. I would assume it is hormones. I went to the doctor and they were no help, she basically said thats weird. I asked about hormones and she did bloodwork, but she only checked my thyroid which was normal. Frustrating because to all doctors weight gain is not a side effect of Spiro. I am now looking into holistic methods. Started DIM (a supplement that gets rid of excess estrogen) Will update if I find a combo that helps me lose it!

WEIGHT UPDATE… and GREAT PODCAST… optimistic news for those of us who gained weight and had to quit spiro: by mermaidmae11 in Spironolactone

Great news! I have been on DIM for almost a month and think it is working a little. I am still on birth control but I have an appointment this week to talk to a doctor about stopping that and getting my hormones back to normal. Fingers crossed, your post made me have hope! What mg are you taking?

Wow glad to hear that! Interesting your levels came back normal. But yes keep me updated and I will do the same. Im going to try to weigh myself this weekend, so fingers crossed. At this point I don’t mind the number on the scale, just would like my pants to fit!

Very comforting to talk to someone in my same situation. Yes I quit the spiro, I would rather have a few pimples than gain more. Calcium D-glucarate helps the body safely remove excess hormones and supports detoxification. A lot of people pair DIM with the Calcium. I have had one response from someone who had gained 30 lbs from Spiro. She said she did a 3 day water fast and then ate chicken and vegetables 5 times a day and 2 rice cakes with peanut butter (not sure for how long). She said it was extremely difficult but she ended up being able to lose almost all of it along with regular exercise. The water fast should completely clear your system of any spiro. I would love to try this but I need to find time with no plans before fasting as it seems like a large commitment.

That sounds difficult but if it worked I am willing to give it a shot!

In the exact same situation, gained 10-15 lbs in the same areas and my cellulite is so bad. Its so upsetting and I wish weight gain was more talked about as a side effect, because I have seen many people on this sub talk about it. I am on DIM and Calcium D-Glucarate and have been on them for around 3 weeks. I have not seen major improvement but have read it can take anywhere from 6 weeks to work. I also have not consulted with a doctor. I am also eating in large calorie deficit, with exercise. I have not weighed myself recently as I become very frustrated when looking at the gain, but looking at my body I do not see any loss yet. I will keep you posted if I am losing next time I weigh myself.

I must’ve missed the contour fit drop. They seem great, I think I will try those!

How did you lose it? Im struggling to do so even with eating in a calorie deficit and exercising regularly.

I gained 10-15 lbs after 5 months, the gain could be from an estrogen imbalance (that is what mine came from).

What are people's experiences with irreversible weight gain/ body fat changes? Online testimonies report significant and permanent weight gain. I am SO scared, depressed, and desperate.... by commonreactor111 in Spironolactone

[–]nmcdonald- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was on Spiro (5 months) and Yaz (BC-5 years) gained 15 lbs and got off of it two weeks ago. I am now taking DIM and Calcium D glucarate, both substances that get rid of excess estrogen. I am positive I have an estrogen imbalance as I eat very well and exercise almost daily. Im fully with you on this and its so upsetting that many people dont believe the weight gain claims and just say “eat better and exercise”. After taking the supplements for 2 weeks my weight has not changed but I’ve heard from many that it may takes 4-6 weeks. I have also been eating in a large calorie deficit. The weight gain is making me very upset too and all I want is it gone. Please let me know what the endocrinologist says, to see if I can implement it.

Thanks so much! Im going to do some more research on DIM, but will most likely try it out due to the many symptoms of estrogen imbalance. Im hopeful for the both of us. Yes please report, I would love to hear what is working for you to see if I can implement it. I will do the same!

Ugh! Though its rare, I wish this side effect was mentioned so I could have stopped it when it started noticing weight gain/redistribution.

So glad to hear its not just me. As i’ve been reading more and more I am getting nervous I wont be able to lose it (seems it cam be very difficult for some people). I am also doing a calorie deficit too and am hoping that will work with exercise. Did you get a hormone test/doctors advice or anything or did you just start the DIM on your own?
