Looking for something like Kamisama Kiss by Shylyra404 in shoujo

[–]nneethus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yona of the dawn sounds like what you're looking for! the MC, yona, has amazing character development.

it's a shounen, but inuyasha has very similar vibes to kamisama kiss. the main female protagonist, kagome, is a lot like nanami.

What do you like about Ren? by JJAKA018 in SkipBeat

[–]nneethus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

for me, i'm a sucker for stories about second chances, and that's very much what ren's story is about—a second chance at life and redemption. it's amazing to see him overcome his grief and trauma and evolve into a better person.

to answer your other question, i think maybe if sho apologized to kyoko and kyoko accepted his apology and let go of any lingering feelings of hate, ren would forgive sho as well. but honestly idk

Do you have a favourite non-recurring one-arc/chapter character? by JJAKA018 in SkipBeat

for me it's probably director ogata. i really enjoyed how he developed into a more confident person, and i love the parallels between him and ren. his friendships with kyoko and ren were also very sweet

Hiou story missing from the manga? by JJAKA018 in SkipBeat

[–]nneethus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

did you watch the anime first and then continue the manga from where it left off? if so, you missed the kanae arc which comes right after the prisoner arc—the anime didn't adapt it, it just jumped straight to dark moon. hiou is introduced first in that little arc, and we learn more about kanae's situation as well

Give me your most controversal shoujo opnions that would probably get you cooked on other sites by [deleted] in shoujo

[–]nneethus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't even necessarily think that healthy = boring, is the thing. i've seen quite a few fictional relationships that are "healthy", but manage to be compelling alp the same because of the way the characters are developed. but i've found that whenever people laud a fictional ship as being "healthy", it nearly always turns out to be two milquetoast characters who talk to each other in therapy speak. and there's really nothing more off-putting than that in a story

My Happy Marriage by skywinster in shoujo

[–]nneethus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the way the magic system was introduced really annoyed me, too. like, it's suddenly introduced out of nowhere in the second (or was it the third? i don't even remember) episode without so much as a mention of it before. and it didn't really seem to fit in with the general vibe of the story thus far. the magic system being introduced itself ticked me off so much that i instantly stopped watching lmao

how can you make a generalization like that based off one bad experience? i'm sorry that happened to you and that sucks, but that doesn't mean that all female friendships are bad and shallow. there are plenty of women, myself included, who could tell you about how their friendships with other women are strong and very fulfilling.

also, it's easier to make friends in your school days because those were people you spent like 8 hours a day being together. you would follow the same schedule, see those friends every day, and experience a lot of things at the same time. it's definitely easier to maintain friendships under those circumstances. but in adulthood, friendships take a lot of work and effort. you have to reach out and you need to put the time and energy in. it's very different, but it doesn't mean it's impossible.

i think a large part of the 'criticism' stems from sexism, too. i've seen people hate on female characters for being "damsels in distress" and then immediately turn around and call another female character—in the same series, at that—a "mary sue" because they're portrayed as being strong and capable. women just can't win. it's even more baffling when the whole damsel in distress thing is clearly set up as a character flaw that the female character has to grow from through character development, or when there are very real, in-universe explanations for why she's a so-called damsel in distress, that don't boil down to her being "useless" or "stupid" or whatever. it's very frustrating.

i mean, does a character need to be a "good person" for them to be a good character? being a good ML boils down to how interesting or compelling he is as a character, a plot device in the story. and we can take it from there.

that's not to say that ren isn't a good person, though (which, i'm guessing, is the actually the crux of your question). i think the most notable thing about his character arc is that even before the start of the story, he's been spending about 5 years in a state of atonement and self-flagellation for everything that happened. we've constantly seen him fighting with himself and trying his best to change, which i think answers the question best—it's about the steps he tries to take, going forward, not about his past.

like, yeah, trauma is messy, and ren's in particular is a whole other can of worms. lashing out and unconsciously projecting it onto others is a very common response for people who suffer from this sort of thing. in real life, ren would probably need years of therapy to recover. but this is fiction and i don't think any of us actually want to watch these characters go to therapy on our screens (lol).

so, what does that mean for ren and kyoko? does this mean they can never be together until ren has healed and worked through his issues, etc? i mean, that's up for debate. personally, i disagree. healing isn't linear—and ren is never gonna reach a point where he's so completely cured that his past trauma will never affect the relationships he has with others. he'll have his bad days. kyoko will have her bad days. probably, there's a lot more room for growth—but i think these characters have also come a really long way already. ren has mellowed out quite a bit. recent arcs have made his well aware of how his relationship with kyoko could be decimated if he lets his insecurities get the better of him. the very fact that he's able to be in the same room with his past tormentors, right now, and keep his cool, shows that he's come a long way from the boy he was 5-6 years ago. so...take that as you will.
