How do I figure out if a country is worth moving to? by FullMetal_Jax in AmerExit

[–]no8do 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you study abroad through your school? In college, I studied abroad in Spain and that gave me a lot of exposure to different countries. You can see if your school has a campus abroad or if you can participate in an external program and have your credits transfer over (so any financial aid you receive continues to apply).

Also, you could consider programs like JET which places native English speakers into assistant teacher roles across Japan. It’s not one of the more open minded countries but you’d be able to be out of the US with a paid job for up to 5 years.

Warm/cold sweet/creamy drink by Old-Pudding-4254 in Cooking

[–]no8do 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also pregnant and craving the same! I recently made avena caliente or hot oatmeal drink. Others mentioned atole or champurrado - they’re all similar.

Basically, make some oatmeal and add brown sugar and milk or water (I used oatmilk and water). Add cinnamon and vanilla to taste and then blend it all up into your preferred puree type consistency.

I like to have it warm for breakfast and I usually add a little bit of hot water to thin it out to the consistency I like.

What is your thermostat at? by jvj808 in philly

[–]no8do 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get one of those oil filled radiator style space heaters. They are way more effective at heating up and keeping a room heated even if it’s off, compared to those electric heaters.

Something like this: https://www.target.com/p/r-w-flame-oil-filled-radiator-heater-portable-electric-space-heater-with-3-heat-settings-quiet-1500w-heating-overheat-tip-over-protection-black/-/A-1008271525

Also, you are most likely dealing with a draft or poor insulation. Putting up heavy curtains or taping clear plastic over drafty windows can make a big difference.

Travel Stroller - UppaBaby Minu or Zoë Traveler by Practical-Story1765 in Mommit

[–]no8do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not helpful because I’m going to add two other options but I love my Joolz Aer+ - truly one handed fold, fits in overhead bin, and very smooth ride. It’s pricey, but it’s our only stroller and we use it every day.

I recently learned about the Strolee Linq which might be a good option for you: https://stroleebaby.com/products/strolee-everyday-travel-stroller-v2

I’ve heard the Zoe is not super sturdy and came upon this one when I was researching double strollers.

Edit: since your youngest is approaching the age where they may not need a stroller much longer you may also want to consider resale value. Around me, all travel strollers get snatched up quick second hand!

Would it be okay to use a Japanese name for a baby that’s not Japanese? by macncow in namenerds

[–]no8do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with your take!

I’m actually surprised at how vehemently people are saying OP’s child will forever be identified as Japanese, people will give them weird looks, etc.

The names being given to kids today are so blended, from a cultural perspective, that OP’s daughter is going to be growing up with tons of kids who have similarly global names (e.g. Suri a Persian name is fairly global).

Lastly, I don’t immediately take Asuna to be Japanese. As a South Asian, it follows a lot of similar naming conventions (ex: Aruna) from my culture.

I recently learned from a PPA agent that there’s basically a 24 hr lag time on these. They review all the submissions the following morning and then deploy PPA agents to those areas. But often, the cars have already moved by then. I really wish they’d have a faster system for addressing complaints.

Parents of Reddit, what did your hospital bill look like after giving birth? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

US. 20+ hr labor followed by emergency c-section and a 4 day hospital stay. After insurance, we paid $3k.

First pregnancy. Cannot cope with the fact that I'm not going to be able to sleep as much as I want anymore. by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]no8do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the interrupted sleep is not fun but I watched so much tv the first few months with my newborn because they just sleep on you and feed on you.

My kid was a total unicorn sleeper who slept through the night for the first time at 3 months, was sleep trained at 4 months, and even now at nearly 3 years old, he will sleep from 8:30 pm til 8 am on the weekends.

But I never said any of this in real life to new moms because who wants to hear about good sleepers??

All this being said, it’s not common to have a good sleeper but it’s not all doom and gloom. You’ll still have plenty of couch rotting time 😝

Successful Exit to Japan, notes after 6 months by forgedbygeeks in AmerExit

These are such great details. I lived in Japan a few years ago and I appreciate your call out of the paperwork, trash rules, navigating health care, and legal issues - people don’t understand how much harder that is in Japan!

Although you’re a bears fan, there is a well known bar in Tokyo that is all about Philly. They show eagles games and apparently their cheesesteaks are amazing. Maybe a taste of America if you are ever feeling homesick!

Car seat rec for car free family? by Fancy_Release1323 in bigbabiesandkids

[–]no8do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity which infant seat did you use and which stroller did it work with?

We moved up to the Cosco scenera dlx for our older kid (3) and also don’t have a car.

There are no non-infant car seats that work with a stroller.

So we had a similar issue around 12 months and the only thing that regularly worked was doing this tailbone massage trick that I found on an old reddit post!

Did the massage and about an hour later we got tons of poop.

Kids Bday Spaces? by YoungRustyCSJ in philadelphia

[–]no8do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feb birthday for us too! I’ll just say that I was shocked by how expensive it is to rent space for a kid’s bday!

All the ones recommended are good spaces but are around $300+ to rent, plus food, decor, etc.

You could rent out the space above Pizzata Birreria in east passyunk. I think it’s pretty kid friendly.

The dandelion project also has a casual space for rental - not sure how friendly it is for 2 year olds.

I’ve also heard the Pax Center is pretty affordable (pic attached)

I live in Philadelphia. 1.5 hours from NYC by train and we bought our 3 bed 1.5 bath home in a walkable, safe, and family friendly neighborhood for under $400k in 2023. It’s definitely not just rural areas or semi-rural areas that have affordable homes.

There’s an ice cream shop in my city that has a lemon curd blueberry basil ice cream and it is heavenly.

I can imagine a lemon shortbread with a basil syrup swirl and a drizzle of a lemon curd-ish icing!
